Lewis and Clark set-overhyped?

raycycaraycyca Posts: 1,706 ✭✭✭
Does anyone else see the Lewis and Clark set as being overhyped? Apparently the sets have arrived and ther are NO special coins like the Buffalo dollars, etc to make this set worthwhile. I'll keep one set but I'm giving away sets to my in-laws as they are related to Lewis and Clark. At least that will make their day. As for "investors", I think you'd better grab the money now while you can, the "special" sets are limited to ONLY 50,000 of circulation quality coins. Just my fifty cents. Ray

  • Purchased two of them but they haven't arrived yet. Will be keeping them but I probably won't even open the box they were shipped in. Curious as to how many sets buyers have canceled or will be sending back?
  • I bought a few BU nickels, but I really don't see much hype in them.

Yes, I'd say that it was over-hyped. The coin's design was based upon a medal, not a coin like the buffalo dollar. Since the vast majority of collectors don't care about medals, the Lewis and Clark dollars don't have as large of a collector base.

The sad part is that some collectors who really one wanted one were shut out by the greedy folks who ordered more than they needed. These greedy folks thought that they would make a quick buck. If the secondary market for these coins really does melt away, the way it has for some other modern commemoratives, it will be poetic justice if those who were shut out from ordering get to buy the coins for less than the issue price and leave the greedy folks holding the bag. image

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Buying these for resale is no different than a dealer stocking his case. As for over hyped, yes
the mint wants more of the $$ that the Buffalo craze produced. Useless, no as the limited
50k peace medal makes it worth the while just as the 50k uniface note (which was the main reasonI bought the buffalo sets)
    does.

Anything from the US Mint is hyper-hyped. They have hardly produced anything worthwhile since 1947.
  • BarryBarry Posts: 10,100 ✭✭✭
Yes, everything the Mint makes is overhyped and overpriced.

Look at the Sac dollars they're selling for a premium, and people pay it!

Look at error coins - In any other manufacturing business "irregulars" are sold dirt cheap or destroyed/recycled. In the coin biz, mistakes generate big bucks. Why is the Mint different? Mint employees are no different than machinists, quality control people, etc., in other industries, except that they are governement workers, and as such, are bound to lower standards image

If this set follow the usual pattern the bulk of any profits to be made will be made early on.

What has surprised me is that the ebay sales are still holding in the $130 - $150 range even though it is now known that there are no special coins in the sets.

If an item wasn't overhyped, would people pay attention to it?
  • pontiacinfpontiacinf Posts: 8,915 ✭✭
no special coins in the sets.

I said before, and will say it again, I bought the buffalo and this set for the uniface note. Im sure medal collectors bought for the restrike of the peace medal.

    Lewis and Clark set-overhyped?

what i think is over-done is all the whining by everyone, and now we have all the anti-modern guys joining in the fun. the Mint never promoted these sets as having coins with special Matte finish in them, blame your uninformed forum members if you got sucked into that.

it is essentially a commemorative set of items tied to Lewis and Clark-----stamps, coins, a medal and a bill. it also contains some historical background information in the form of pamphlets/booklets. in all regards it differs not one iota from the Buffalo set that all you guys wet your pants over. oh, wait a minute, the coin involved in that set was the classic Buffalo Nickel, not some modern day trash, so i stand corrected.

Geezus-H-Kayrist, if they ever come out with a Morgan C & C Set you guys will crap your pants trying to get them. why not just get on with your highly enjoyable lives and stop complaining about an item you don't particularly care for?? and please, stop with the sour grapes about the already high resale price!! like your cherished Buffalo C & C set isn't still selling for almost three times it's original issue price after all this time. if you're gonna whine, at least be fair with your tears!! image

and also like I said, buying these for turnover is NO DIFFERENT than a dealer stocking his case with be it moderns or classics...

I think the people whinning the most are the ones who waited to buy, and now can't

  • I read a lot of whining on other topics as well - so what's the big deal ................ is this not a discussion forum? I learn a lot from hearing people whine - so quit whining about whining.

I don't understand what all the griping is about either. I got online on the 12th and suffered just like everyone else to get my ten sets. It took six days to sell out, anyone who really wanted one or more could get them. Now that they are sold out, it seems the guys who don't have any are griping.

    hey Tom

go to eBay and search for the 2001-D Buffalo Coin and Currency Set. they still sell in excess of twice the issue price of $54.95 from three years ago!!! they have been regularly selling there. that what i find ironic about the replies which seem to think this set is being used to gouge collectors. if it sold now for approximately $200 it would still be at a comparative level with what that set sold for shortly after issue.

i'd also have to echo pontiac's assertion that some comments about "greed" are based in nothing but ignorance and jealousy. please explain the difference between a dealer/collector/investor with regards to this set and any other numismatic item, i'd like to hear the connection!!! for a dealer to say this set shouldn't have been bought and sold at a profit, well............

i was clear from the start, i bought two so one could pay for the other. that doesn't make me greedy or bad, quite to the contrary it makes me speculatively wise!!image

I did the same thing. I bought two sets. One to sell and make up some of the price difference. My wife is related to Lewis and Clark and she has all the past stuff. I'm going to give her the set after I also get the uncirculated and proof issues, along with the stamps. This will help win her over to collecting coins. maybe..... Thanks for your inputs! Ray

ok, you got me curious ........... How is she related to both - aren't L and C two different ppl? Did L's daughter marry C's son ........ or ?

Ray, your wife, is she related to Lewis Or Clark. Cannot be both.

    Tbig
  • Conder101Conder101 Posts: 10,536
Why can't she be related to both? Suppose her mother was related to Lewis and her father was related to Clark. She would be related to both of them as would any children she had. Or she could have had an ancester who had picked up a duel relationship as described above in which cse she would also be related to both of them. The only way it couldn't be true would be if Lewis and Clark were less than two generations in the past.

Ray which is it? I was just wondering out loud. I have blood lines in my Family Tree that run directly to Meriwether Lewis, but not Clark.

Conder101 back off man. Ever since I sent you that book from Scott Ttravis that had the picture of the old slabs in it which you never thanked me for, you have been very agumentative toward me.
