I was just trying to give you some advice. Wasnt flaming you. You decided to be a butt about it. I gave you the benefit of the doubt, you spat it in my face.
BTW, I was not making you an offer. I was telling you what I would feel comfortable in the coin.
Also, I was doing generalities in my math. That is why I put 10000 "ish" . Why dont you take that coin to a dealer and see what you get offered. Why not sell it back to Legend and see what you get offered.
You are ignorant of the market, that can be forgiven.... your rudeness will not be tolerated.
You piss enough people off on this board and I promise you word will get around and you wont be able to move that coin with a bulldozer...

I am actually a very nice guy. It just seems that most on this board have their own agenda. Most of you seem to feel that your sh*t doesn't stink. I am far from ignorant of the market, and fully realize that your intention is to buy coins as cheaply as possible. I have nothing against that since I behave in the same manner. It is good business sense. But please do not insult my intelligence with your low ball rediculous offer. As far as pissing people off on this board, I really don't think that many have the ability to come up with $10k let alone 23k. No matter what my personality or your impression of me, if someone really desires this coin it wont matter whether they like me or not. Business is Business
What part of "I was not making you an offer" dont you understand?
Very similar to Heritage not making you an offer either....
You are a clown... I am done here. Russ... take care of him!!
John
I see that I touched a nerve. So sorry that you can dish it out but can't take it. Very childish behaviour on your part. I expected more from you. As far as Russ is concerned, how exactly do you expect him to take care of me. This ought to be interesting. Don't be surprised if Russ winds up purchasing this coin at the asking price.
Ratios of PCGS PF67's to PF68's is about 5 to 1. That would mean that a tripling of the price would be the most that a 68 could be worth over the 67 price. So figure that 3x an identical 67 cam price is what this coin is worth. Using the 30% rule over blue sheet bid for an excellent sight seen coin, I come up with $6250 for the 67 coin. Toss in another 10% for the camio and get $6864. Mulitply by 3 and get about $20,600. That would be my top estimate of the coin's value unless it was a monster extraordinaire. A 3x price ratio for a 5x pop ratio is extremely generous. A 2.75x might be more accurate. In any case the coin should be in the $17-21K range imo using a 2.5x to 3x price ratio.
The seller certainly knows how to schmooze his buying public.
Who knows what it's worth these days. I would imagine the PF68 pops are increasing every day on that type of coin. But I'm certain it's a nice coin or they wouldn't have offered to buy it back.
>>>Puff called me just recently and we had a pleasant conversation. If all you people had his personality, the world would be a better place and coin collectors would command more respect.<<<
Cleon is correct on this..... After I posted my last response challenging him to send me the coin on approval, (and if I liked the coin), I would meet his price of $23K........ Well this was a ploy by me to try to draw him out to see if he really would be willing to send me the coin on approval....
About 15 minutes after I posted my challenge to Cleon I received a PM from him giving me his name, address, and phone number asking me to contact him to see if we could come to some arrangement on his coin, which like the many others here I had doubts about wether or not he actually owned, or even had the coin in his possession....
As Cleon has stated in his post, (quoted above), and after about 30 minutes of discussion we both decided since I actually really wasn't in the market for a Barber half in any grade, and that I was in fact trying to draw him out to see if he really would send this coin on approval, (if in fact he had it), he was indeed willing to send it to me on approval......
After more discussion I made some suggestions, and gave him my opinion on what his best route may be for selling his coin, and we ended the conversation at that point in total agreement......
One other comment I would like to make is after my discussion with Cleon if he did have a coin I wanted, and it was priced right, I would have no problem buying from him on an approval basis as that is how I buy all of my coins, with the rare exception of an Ebay purchase.

I understand your math and I don't disagree, however this is an exceptionally fine coin and I don't think that the premium is excessive. If anyone on this board were to offer me $22k I would probably accept the offer. But since most who post here are just big talkers and will not step up to the plate I doubt even if I offered the coin for $100 all you would do is state that it is phoney or I dont own it. The glass is always half empty with most of the posters here. Present company excluded.
I dont see what the big leap is to do an approval deal with anyone. There is no risk to the buyer at all! I would buy a coin on approval from Charles Manson!!! I suppose that the point you are making is that he has the coin and is a legitimate seller. I believed that from the very beginning.
I had no beef with CLEON or the coin. I am sure that the coin is very nice. It should be since it is in a PC 68 holder.
I took offense when he got all over my case when I offered a friendly post. I said that I would be comfortable in the coin at 14000$. That was just me. I dont collect proof barber halves...
If it were an early gold piece things would have been different. I just dont understand why CLEON was so belligerent and pugnacious from the very beginning?

Coinlieutenant..... As I explained in my post after I had talked to Cleon, and he agreed to send the coin to me on approval, I saw no point in having him send the coin to me on approval, (when I knew I really wasn't interested in it), just so I could return it saying something like I didn't agree with the grade etcetera, which would cost him even more money than he already has in the coin for S/H/Ins., just so I could save face here on this forum and not have to eat a little crow after calling him out with the challenge to send the coin to me on approval, I think would be unethical, and for a better use of words really "chicken chit" of me for doing so....... Wouldn't you agree?
Even though I don't agree with exactly how Cleon went about trying to sell his coin on Ebay, and on this forum, it is his right to sell it the best way he see's fit....... Personally I would have gone about trying to sell this coin a little differently than he has but it is his coin and he has some serious money tied up in it.
My only regret here is that I stuck my nose in where it didn't belong, and I'm having to eat crow for doing so..... But I do believe if one lets their Alligator mouth overload their Jaybird ass they should have balls enough to admit it and move on.
I dont think that you did anything wrong. You were checking to see if he was legit and that is fine. You did the right thing by not tying up the coin. As far as not getting involved in something that wasnt you business, I disagree.
We all are watchdogs in this market for crooks. And while I think that he is selling the coin too high and has a very defensive bad attitude in general, I dont think he is a crook...
A little clueless about how the market works, but not a crook. He very well maybe selling the coins he buys from legend at 20% profit a piece, but if he is, in most cases he is burying the people in them.
I guess there is nothing wrong with doing that as long as you dont hype the coin and the investment potential beyond what you know it to be. I think that there might be some of that going on here.

Hey, Cleon, one of the rules here is that you get to bump your listing once per day by adding a comment (or whatever) to the thread. If you want us to respect your position here, you should abide by the rules. This is probably the first time that you have heard this, so I will give you the benefit of the doubt. People have been booted from this forum for not abiding by this. It is only fair as it gives everyone (no matter how expensive or great or inexpensive or not so great their coins are) equal access. If you add no further comment onto this, I will assume that you are willing to play by our forum rules. You may feel free to add a comment or "bump" daily.

Cleon: One of the rules I have learned about selling a coin is to avoid repeated efforts to sell the coin over a prolonged period of time. It can only damage the "freshness" of the coin.
Now as far as selling it with Heritage or the other major auctioneers you might be better off. But only try it once with a strong reserve. If it does not sell then I urge you to put it away for a few years!
A 20% return on a coin is not very good since coin holdings perform best when put away for a long time.
The collectors and dealers on this forum are mostly very careful buyers, price wise. I have been know to pay top dollar for certain coins but they had to be irreplaceable coins. The proof coin you have is replaceable even though very nice.

P.S. Cleon Jones was my favorite Mets player back in the late 1960's and he had the number 21 on his uniform which is one of the reasons I took a liking to him aside from the fact that I always liked the number 21 on my uniform in all sports (Roberto Clemente was another of my favorites as well!!!)

thank you for the advice. It is greatly appreciated. I checked every possible area and could not find any Proof 68 Cam Barber half dollars for sale. I have all the Long Beach Heritage catalogues and there is not a single coin listed as a PF68. I seem to have the only one graded by PCGS. As far as Cleon, he is my all time favorite Met and I have a bunch of autographed cards that he personally signed for me. I would be glad to send you one of them gratis if you like. He should have won the batting title in 69 when he batted .340.
That damned Pete Rose knocked him out of the batting title in the last week of the season. :-(
I remember when Cleon Jones was batting well over .400 in June 1969. I thought he could do it over the course of the whole season too.
That damned Pete Rose also knocked my favorite Cleveland Indian catcher Ray Fosse out of a career by bowling him over in a All Star game when the game wasn't even on the line.
I hated Pete Rose. But he should still be a Hall of Famer.
But I would indeed love to take you up on your offer!
PM on its way!
P.S. If no other coins in Long Beach of the PR68 (ok PF68 whatever the correct acronym is these days!) then you may very well have a good shot in doing well. You need two bidders that are fighting over the same coin. That is the key and very difficult to predict.
Suggestion: Might be better to consign the coin well in advance and quite frankly, I am unsure how well Pittsburgh ANA will do this year with the gas prices and all. It might still be a banner ANA show but I have noticed a drop off in consumer auto travel vacation wise this week!
No proof 68's in your Long Beach catalogues? I did a quick check on Heritage and plugged in the date 1909 and found a PF68 that sold in the Sept 2002 LB signature sale for $10,600.

Is that why PCGS commands a far greater premium than NGC. Next you will tell me that Timex is better than Rolex. Who is the ignorant one.
Is that why PCGS commands a far greater premium than NGC.
That is maybe, MAYBE true on average, but that definitely does not work for any individual coin. There are over and under-graded coins in both PCGS and NGC holders, as well as coins that are par. The intelligent collector will be able to discern whether the coin in the holder is solid for the grade or not. The speculator? Maybe yes, maybe no.
You are the ignorant one. Its not like Timex and Rolex at all. They make watches, correct? Does PCGS or NGC make coins? NO, they only grade them. So how can you say your coin is better because of the plastic around it. Its like saying your Porche is better than someone elses because you use differant wax.

As far as Cleon, he is my all time favorite Met and I have a bunch
of autographed cards that he personally signed for me. I would
be glad to send you one of them gratis if you like. He should have
won the batting title in 69 when he batted .340.

You're right... now we are sure that you're 100% close-minded and ignorant. I have some ugly coins in PCGS holder that technically meet the grade. I think you win for stupidest post of the day... no where's FanOfModerns?

Is that why PCGS commands a far greater premium than NGC.
Next you will tell me that Timex is better than Rolex.
Who is the ignorant one.

Find me another PCGS graded PF-68 Cameo anywhere and then
maybe we can talk intelligently.

Far greater is pushing it, more like slight.
Do you want a baseball card graded by Beckett or by CSA
Which do you think would command a greater premium by any
buyer both intelligent or ignorant.
