I did a search for a thread with feedback from collectors on their favorite (and least) coin series. I stumbled across this thread and thought I would resurrect it. What is your favorite coin series? What is your least favorite?

My Favorite - US Half Cents
    Least Favorite - Roosevelt Dimes

    What are yours?

I am a newer collector (started April 2020), and I primarily focus on U.S. Half Cents and Type Coins. Early copper is my favorite.

    Good thread…..
I don’t collect anything modern so I’ll just break it down into my favorite older type coinage.

Favorite - all pre-33 gold and Morgans
Least favorite - I love all coins but if I had to pick my least favorite, probably trimes.

Least favorite: Nickel Three Cent Pieces

    Favorite: Silver Proof sets
Least Favorite: The junk that masquerades as dollar coins

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I didn’t particularly love Peace Dollars until this one came along.

I think most coins are great when you find the right one.

Let me phrase it in a different way

    Least favorite = relatively common
    Most favorite = relatively scarce

Love the designs, but the coins are relatively common, they exist by the thousands or tens of thousands by date/mintmark:

    • Walking Liberty
    • Peace Dollars
    • Morgans
    • Commemoratives
    • Buffalos (base metal coins are icky)
    • Mercury Dimes

Most favorite - because they are relative scarce and hard to find.

    • $5 Classic gold
    • $5 & $10 Libs.
    • Seated quarters (do they get any scarcer?)
    • Barber Halves and Seated Halves.
    • Seated Dollars - impossible to find unmolested, cleaned or without a whole lotta dings and marks.

The older the better for me. Half disme, chain cent, 1794-5 silver, bring it on. Colonials, even better still.

Anything post 1964 when it all went fiat, no interest at all.

I still get excited over finding a nearly worthless wheat cent in change, so anything pre-64 would be 'favorite'

post-64s are not interesting-TimNH and I share similar taste

Favorite: St. Gaudens, love the design.

Least favorite: The Barber series, unless the coin is blast white in mint state, they look terrible IMO.

Barbers and seated liberty coins would make very good clad coins!

If this is for a US series:

Least favorite is small dollars (including SBA) collectively. I'm sure I could find some contenders among the recent quarters which I don't even recognize.

As a design, favorite is Draped Bust Large Eagle dollar, though there are other specific coins I'd rather own more. My overall favorite US coins aren't US Mint. All are something else, from colonial and territorial gold.

The Bust dollar is one I can afford, if I wanted to prioritize it over my primary collection which I won't. I'd like to own the full denomination set, but not at the $20K it would cost a mid to better grade circulated set.

    Favs Capped Bust designs
    Least Liberty V Nickels

    Modern Silver Eagles
    Least SBA

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.
