Who's submitted a coin for a regrade and wound up with a grade higher?

I just saw in another post that someone sent in a coin in it's original holder to PCGS for a grade review and had it go from a 64 to a 65. I guessing this is VERY VERY rare......

I get a fair amount of upgrades on regrades, I always send them in the pcgs slab. Maybe 70% of what I think will does.
I have never used the presidential review. Not sure what you mean by grade review.

I've only submitted four coins for regrade ....so far! Two of the 4 (1932-D Washington Quarters)
upgraded from PCGS 63 to PCGS 64.) I really expected 3 out of 4. Before it's over there will be more as the majority of my set is undergraded!

Although I rarely send a coin in for regrade I sent a total of 2 Walkers in for regrade in their holders...... Of those 2 sent I had a 1943 ms66 Walker come back as a 1943 ms67.

Edited to say.... BTW I traded that 1943 ms67 in for this GBW ms68 from Pinnacle, and saved a couple bucks.image

  • NOT A CRACKOUT.... When you send in a coin (in the PCGS holder) to PCGS say a MS63 and indicate on the submission form "regrade" and it comes back a MS64.....

I would think that PCGS wouldn't question their own grades....

Peaceman-if you are addressing me, all four coins were submitted in their PCGS slabs,,,OK!?image

Stop and think about what you are not seeing. You can only re-grade a graded coin...NOT a raw crackout that to them is just a coin sent in to be graded! Old slab....sent in....RE GRADE??!!

Mine was not a crackout. You asked about regrades in original holders. If it was a crackout, I wouldn't have responded.

I sent an 1861-O half dollar in a PCGS MS-62 holder and they reholdered it as MS-63.
I sent an 1899 Double Eagle in a PCGS MS-62 holder and they reholdered it as MS-63
I sent an 1855 Half Dime in a PCGS AU-58 holder and they reholdered it as MS-63
I sent a 1852 Three Cent Piece in a PCGS AU-58 holder and they reholdered it as MS-62

I done this several times. The last PCGS regrade (i.e., no crackout) was a 1912 or 1914 PR65BN that upgraded to PR66BN.

  • When I say "NOT A CRACKOUT" I... yes... I... meaning me... do understand that it's still in the holder... I was just making sure everyone was on the same page..... have you guys started image Let's re-read:

"I just saw in another post that someone sent in a coin in it's original holder to PCGS for a grade........ "... mmmm that's ounds right.....
"When you send in a coin (in the PCGS holder) to PCGS say a MS63........." yep... there it is again.... holder.... yep...image
  • So... the next question... WHEN YOU SUBMIT A COIN IN A PCGS HOLDER TO PCGS FOR A REGRADE, is the holder you sent in (with the hope of it upgrading) usually in an older generation holder or not.....

    Did I confuse anyone...... I hope not... If I did, I'm sorry.....image

I tried upgrading a 1955 Pr68Dcam Frankie to no avail. It was really nice. However, I'm still no expert on grading so I'll take PCGS word on it.

Peaceman, When you send in a coin for regrade " in the PCGS holder " PCGS will crack it out
and the graders will see the coin raw. According to DH the graders do not know it was submitted
as a regrade. They are not seeing the grade on the holder unless its submitted as a crossover
    from another slab.

  • Cool.... so it all comes down to knowing for sure it's undergraded... I guess then you get an entire new slab as well no matter what...

What if the coin is downgraded? Do they automatically offer you fair market value difference, or did you need to ask for that?

What if the coin is downgraded?

If the graders down grade the coin the computer puts it back to the original grade
and reholders the coin at its original grade,,, Unless the coin is way over graded.
I doubt anyone here would be sending in a coin that over graded for a regrade.

From personal experience, I only had one coin downgrade. A problem had developed in the holder

causing the coin to turn. I sent it in for a spot review-a free service. In addressing the problem the coin

dropped two grades and I was duly compensated. End of story!image

It happens sometimes, but I believe only rarely does such regrade result in a substantial increase in value to the coin. Five years ago I sent in my 36 S Walker in PC 5 & it upgraded to PC 6. It was pretty straightforward, because the coin had "the look," and did not have the typical contact marks on Miss Liberty's skirt / body that one expects to see on an MS 65.

OTOH, after consulting dealers that know more than I do about four other coins, I sent them in for upgrade and was S.O.L. It's often a gamble at best. When people whose names are known by everyone in numismatics tell you that the coin would not look out of place in a holder whose grade is one point higher, and it doesn't, it is frustrating.

I think the best thing to do is to know how much more value the particular coin is worth as a one point upgrade, multiply it by an educated guess re the chance it'll upgrade, and compare this amount to what it costs in grading fees and shipping to get it done.

    "Seu cabra da peste,
    "Sou Mangueira......."
  • I think their fairly reasonable about admitting their mistakes. They've upgraded my coins many times. But my batting average isn't as good as some of the submitters on this thread. I'm tickled pink if I get one out of five to upgrade.

IMO, there's a big difference between a coin that "would not look out of place" in a certain holder and a coin that's a "lock". The "locks" are the ones that go up sometimes on review, the "wouldn't look out of place" are the ones that are thrown against the ceiling over and over by the crackout artists until they stick. Collectors rarely do that and thus rarely get those upgrades.
  • I have had a few to upgrade!

Out of about 40 submissions I have had:
2 go 2 points higher (WOW)
    5 go 1 point higher
And the rest were waisted $$$.

I got a 2 point upgrade from a 1938 WQ. It was in a 1st gen holder graded MS64. I sent it in (in the holder) and it came back MS66.
