So here I am doing the PSA shuffle...

Same old drill. Got that first little tease of an email yesterday saying that my cards had been received for processing, and every time I walk by my computer I jump on the PSA site and see if any grades are up. With the express service it shouldn't be as bad as the last submission I did (on the $5 special - my first real submission which I thought took forever at two weeks from received to shipped back to me!) Anywho, this one is only 2 cards and it said so in big letters on the outside of the package, so I'm feeling pretty optimistic that it could be any time now. I thought about doing what mikeschmidt did and waiting til I got the package in the mail, but there's no way I can hold that long on something like this!

Good luck and I hope the wait is a short one for you... any Nolan's among that robust lot?
  • mudflap02mudflap02 Posts: 2,060 ✭✭
Yeah, it's the candy lid and a Dell Stamp.
  • Mudflap02,

You will have to wait the full five days, before they are posted. What ever day they noted as received ex. Tuesday, your grades will be posted Tuesday next week. The only way they would be done faster is if there is nothing else for them to do, which I highly doubt.

    Keith,

Did you go after the ugly 74 Ryan PSA 10 in the Mile High shilling auction?

Can't wait to find out what you get on that Candy Lid... my prediction is a PSA 6. Good luck on the Dell Stamp too. Centering is the key on that one.
  • mudflap02mudflap02 Posts: 2,060 ✭✭
I'm just gonna throw the predictions out now - it would have been fun to take big scans of both of them and get some predictions from the board, but they're both such oddball items and it's really hard to jusge something without seeing it in person.

The candy lid I have to say quickly became the favorite item in my collection. The only trouble is that I had the damn thing for 2 days before it went on vacation to Newport Beach for a week or so. Some of you probably saw the thread I posted on it earlier. When I got it, the pictures didn't do it justice! The colors are so vivid and bright that the picture almost looks like it is 3-D. It's a great looking picture, with the airbrushed thing going on with the hat. The downsides are that the centering is pretty rough, and any time it's not perfect on a round card with a colored border it will always look worse than a square card with no borders that has the same problem. There was a little chipping on the back, and on the tab there was a tiny indentation where some little whippersnapper probably stuck his thumbnail to get at that delicious gum (kind of cool though - gives it a little character). Like I said before I got it, I'm expecting a 5 on it. Anything higher than that is bonus for me. It will be the first one graded and a damn hard thing to find, so who cares?

The Dell Stamp is a different story. I bought an intact book and pulled the stamp out myself. I don't exactly know what I'm doing on those, so I gave it my best shot. The only reason I sent it in is because it's pre-1972 and doesn't qualify as a modern card. My guess is a 6 - I requested NQ's because i didn't want to end up with something like a 7 MC. Also, with shipping fees, it was either 1 card graded for $20 or 2 for $30. There were a few others I really wanted to send in but with summer tuition around the corner, not for $10 a pop.
  • CON40CON40 Posts: 1,324 ✭✭✭
    Scott;

I did not... thought the gavel price seemed reasonable (but that 15% vig hurts). A friend of mine saw it in person and would not recommend it to me due to a rough corner and a nasty little print dot in the top purple banner... I'm saving my money for... for... for... I'm using my left hand to restrain my right hand from clicking the mouse and making a bid on another $2K Ryan currently available! I'm sweatin' bullets with that low low low low lwo low price!!

BTW: why do you refer to the 74 Ryan as a shilling? Care to elaborate for an ignoramus?
  • Keith,

Its more of a feeling then anything concrete.

Its just the way their auctions are run, when time is up the auction should end. The way they do it, it seems like they check all the lots and start running bids up on the ones that would be bargins. Also factored into that is the private bidding, you will never know if its the house or another collector. Everybody comments how you can't trust a Ebay Private auction, these are run the same way and they friggin go on forever, constantly renewed every 15 minutes.

When I won my 71 Ryan PSA 9 in their November 2002 auction, that thing went on until 3AM Central time, it was just ridiculus.

    Jeff:

Sent 10 cards in this week. 2 are the 81D Ryan and Schmidt from the boxes bought from you. Testing to see what PSA thinks.

Thanks again for working with me on those. They obviously were not opened, judging on the wide selection of stars and HOFers. The series just bites altogether.

Will let you know how the grades turn out.

Working on three 86 Bonds 11T that are no less than 9, so that feels better.

    Good luck with yours.

Keith who bought boxes from me-

Yeah, I bought a lot of 4 of those boxes off ebay - I usually don't dabble in unopened wax. I did for a little while until I realized that stacks of commons and wrappers didn't look as nice as little plastic holders with Nolan Ryan cards in them. I went ahead and sprung for those because they ended in the middle of the night and I figured I would open 1, sell 3, and hopefully make my money back. I sold all 4 without any problems. I was kind of worried at first because the seller was kind of hard to get in touch with, but the boxes all arrived well packed. I checked the packs in every box and as far as I could tell they looked great. It was really hard not to go tearing through one right when I got it (As you can probably tell right now I have the patience of a 2 year old). Good luck with your cards - especially the Ryans- I'm sure you will get 10s and 11's because that's what happens when I let something go!

    Scott-
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that PSA will have my grades up before next Tuesday. They were able to easily beat their deadline in the middle of the $5 special, and I'm going to have faith in them again and publicly say that they can do it. If not, screw it, PSA just lost tens of dollars of my business every year and I'm joining the boys on the PRO message boards and registry. I'll even save them the trouble and use my own sharpie to turn that 3 on my Ryan rookie into an 8 (like turning an F on a report card into a B).

Found the Stamp on ebay - they're pretty easily had. The candy lid I found on Naxcom and was able to talk the guy into my price range. I don't even want to think what that thing would have gone for if it had been on everyone's favorite online auction site. Let's just say it wouldn't be sitting in my collection. I know what you mean though, my town doesn't even have a card store. The Bay is pretty much where I get 99% of my cards, graded and raw. The others I just butter up Keith and Scott for their table scraps.

  • Jeff,

Funny you should mention changing grades, I did that in junior high, I turned a couple of "D"'s into "B"'s but I didn't take care of the carbon paper and the ruse lasted for about 5 minutes and then I will say that I never did that again. image

Hopefully you will get your grades early, but don't hold your breath. Hope you get what you feel the cards deserve as grades.

Speaking of the Mile High auction, I just noticed this and wanted to post it. Here's the card from the mile high auction that sold for a little on the havey side of $2,000.

    image

    Here's another one on eBay:

    image

At first I thought it was the same card (notice the print spot) and thought the seller could be in a world of hurt if someone went for his $6,000 card he had already sold. But the cert #'s are different. I checked my 1974 PSA 5, and..... no print spot. I know which one I would rather have.
  • mudflap02mudflap02 Posts: 2,060 ✭✭
And here's a little 1/1 beauty that can be had for a cool $4950. If this guy were smart he would sell it for a reasonable price and put a fair amount of cash in his pocket before a second comes along and cuts its actual (not perceived) value in half.

It's perfectly safe. It's the same seller, he's just using different IDs now for some reason. He has different ones for different sports. Also for cards graded 8, his ID is "Making the grade". Top notch seller though. For as much business as he does he has always shipped me my cards quickly.

Hey! I'm back... this is the price I pay for having to work normal hours! What a thread... true Ryan LoveFest!

Scott, kudos for hangin' in there on the 74 Ryan in the MHCC auction... based on the two scans, the print dot must be the prerequisite to get a PSA 10! I think I'll spend my cake on upgrading to a couple PSA 9s from 69-72. Wonder who got that MHCC Ryan? Any suspects willing to come forward?

I think you might get a good price on that 93 Refractor. I just cut off my right hand so I can live up to my word! image

Believe it or not, I am still waiting on my PSA 10 1980 Ryan to arrive... guess DSL really sits on a personal check for that amount... I can't blame them, and I did receive the email that it's on the way. SOMEDAY!!!

4-sharp broke out his business into the 4 major sports and has IDs for each one. I like it better as I don't have to wade through auctions for Iverson, Jordan, Montana cards to see his baseball stuff.

I've got a question about the refractors. I've never seen one in person, only the scans on ebay. For the other cards from the set,it's pretty evident when it's a refractor. But on the all-star cards with the green background, they look identical. Is there any giveaway on the back of the vard or anything? And do they look that different in person?
  • Bighurt4Bighurt4 Posts: 384

  • Bid with confidence, 4_Sharp_Corners just broke their business down by sport. Had to PayPal his original account since they didn't have the new ones set up yet.

You know I pulled my 74 PSA 9 out and it is superior in every way to either of those show graded bribery gifts. If I had the one from MHCC raw and submitted it, it would come back a PSA 8. The edges are all chewed up, one corner looks like crap, and that damn ugly white spot destroys the eye-appeal. At under $2K I was only looking to buy the slab.

    Just my take on those.

I've bid on the now infamous 4-sharp OPC card as well. I won it at $94 a couple of weeks back but didn't meet the reserve. He has listed it at least 5 times. I'm sure it will show up tomorrow morning. The sad thing is that whoever goodcompany2000 is (who has been conspicuously quiet lately) bought 2 1983 OPC 10's from 4 sharp at 300 apiece when they were 1/1 and 1/2. Makes you wonder about the whole low pop aspect of the hobby.
  • CON40CON40 Posts: 1,324 ✭✭✭

Jeff... it's not easy to tell the difference. When you tilt the card you see the prismatic foil, but because the background has that rainbow pattern, the regular issue looks kinda like a refractor. There are no distinguishing features on the back either. When you see these raw on eBay, be careful as many turdbags will try to sell a common as a refractor and you can't tell the difference in a scan.

Brent... that card will be back! It's been listed 4 times now with no takers even at $100. Next time, his reserve will probably be $75. If I happen to get it, I'll have a PSA 9 available for cheeeeep.

No UPS today... still no PSA 10 1980 Nolie!

4-sharp had all 3 all the time and just unveiled them one at a time (along with the pop numbers which is a little sleazy)... if you had all 3, I bet they came from the same submission. Maybe someone here can look that up. I know it can be done, but I have my dunce cap on today.

goodcompany2000 is "TexasHeatWave" on the Master Set. His name is Brian Haynes. We were swapping lots of email, but then one day he just never replied and has done nothing on eBay simulataneous to his email silence. But he was hot'n'heavy for Ryan for a while and now nothing. He offered me one of those OPC 10s when he got the second one, but it was obvious that it was overpriced. I'd like to hear from him and I hope he's ok, but he's 100% AWOL.

I offered to trade him about 6 PSA 10's for 1 of his OPC cards after he bought the second one and he declined. As far as the pops go, if 4 sharp had them all then they submitted them at different times - I remember looking at them as the cards were listed.

I wasn't trying to demoralize anybody, I just haven't found a good way to store these things. Right now they are in by Grade piles on my pool table, along with all the cards that I have been going through for the last two weeks.
