I figured that I was vastly underutilizing photoshop and thought I might see what kind of auction catalogue I could design. Used my collection as a guinea pig. What do you think? Do I have a future out of the navy?

The coins are too small in comparison to the whole catalog and there aren't enough coins on the cover to convey it is a major sale catalog.

The first thing that is distracting is that the horizon is crooked.
Also, the frame is so heavy on the left because of the dark, underexposed area, and so washed out on the right- it's very distracting.
It's not a bad start, but those are my complaints about the photo itself, not the concept. I only own an F5 and my own photo business, so what do I know.
If you took the photo yourself I would say next time shoot with an ND filter. If not, ignore that last comment.
Hope I don't sound to negative, but it's what I see.
As far as the coins and their placement, what is it that relates them to each other besides the fact that they are round? If you are going to go random like that I would use more coins, or keep them together in some sort of form.

you oughtta do a blue-moon spoof auction catalog. it could be a mystery catalog that contains no coins at all, just empty slabs

umm..larger coins, blurrier background, stroked and outlined font with a small drop shadow and a reflection of coins ni the water. There is a free photoshop from flamingpear.com that will do that effect for you. Have fun!!
