Home PSA Set Registry Forum

I finally completed my Willie Stargell Basic Set

I finally received my submission from the $5 set registry special and I got a PSA 9 on the 1982 Fleer #499. image

I can't believe that this card was the last one that I needed to complete the set - it really shouldn't be that tough to find, but it has never come up on ebay and most of the raw cards that I found were borderline PSA 8 at best (yes, I even opened a couple of wax boxes in search of it).

Anyhow, here is a link to my set if anyone is interested.

JEB.

Good job, I love the 73 card, great action shot...Hey I noticed you have a Jim Rice set, I met him the other day at a Dunkin Donuts, He was standing in line and I told him he looked like Jim Rice and he said "I am Jim Rice" shook my hand, He still is in great shape..He kind of wanted to go unoticed but on the way out He slapped my shoulder and said take care. It was quick but thought I would share it.

Perkdog- that is cool. Any unexpected encounter is cool. But last time I saw Mr. Rice -and that was in 1999 at the All Star Game, it looked to me that Mr. Rice had consumed many, many doughnuts since I saw him in his playing days.
Proud of my 16x20 autographed and framed collection - all signed in person. Not big on modern - I'm stuck in the past!

    JEB,

Now that you're done, maybe I can finally win some cards at good prices. Your deep pockets
have held me back for awhile. Good job. I hate to tell you but I bought a 1982 Fleer Stargell in a
9 about 2 months ago with buy it now on ebay. I just happened on about 2 minutes after it was
listed and bought it for $17. Send me an email with any Stargells you have in 8 or higher. I'll see
if I have anything you need.

    Jeb:

Congratulations! Pops was a great player - just played on the wrong side of Pennsylvania in my opinion ;-)

Great accomplishment! Now that you are done - what are your plans? Upgrade, work on the master set? Move on to something else?
    Inquiring minds want to know!!
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

    Thanks everybody!

    Brian,

I already have that card in PSA 10 (should arrive any day now). Thanks anyway.

    Perkdog,

I agree, the '73 is one of my favorites. Thanks for the Rice story as well.

    Kimo,

I probably have some cards that you'd be interested in. I'll let you know what I have available in the next week or so. I've been very busy lately - I am in the process of moving into a new home.

    Marc,

As you do with the Schmidt set, I will continue to upgrade when I can and I am closing in on finishing a complete master set of Stargell cards as well. There aren't many that I don't have, even though they aren't on the set registry yet. Look for an update in 8 weeks or so (I don't know why it takes so long to get cards added to sets image ).

    JEB,
Congratulations! The set is great, I've been thinking of some Pops cards lately, might have to jump on the bandwagon.

  • Congrats, very impressive. I see that you need the 1968 OPC, the only two I've owned have been shorter/miscut. Have you ever seen a "regular" sized one, the pop is 1?

68 OPC are very hard to find. I've got 3 that are NM or better but all undersized. Rejected by PSA.
I had 2 Clementes that were the same size. Culd the argument be made that if undersized but not rimmed that they should be gradeable. I think so since that is how the came from the factory.

JEB, a fine job...congratulations! I always liked Pops a lot growing up, you chose a classy player to chase a set of. Thanks also for your great spreadsheet site, and the updates on there.

    Nice going JEB........

Have you thought about starting a Stargell 'Chicken on the Hill with Will' set? This could include all items pertaining to his resturant, including the chicken as well. Does PSA grade chicken parts? GAI at least has holders that might be the right dimensions. image

Speaking of, any of you ever been to his place? Unfortunately, I never made it.

Great job JEB. Pops was one of my favorite players when I was growing up. I was fortunate to see him play many times between 1975 and 1982.

    So what's next?
