You know, Frank, that doesn't seem to be a very detailed explanation.
krazyace5,
A big part of the deep cameo designation is mirror depth. A DCAM, in addition to strong contrast, should have smooth glassy mirrors with no interruptions by mint frost in any quadrant of the surfaces.
Doesn't it have something to do with the amount of $100's wrapped around the submission?
You shout in your sleep. Perhaps the price is just too steep. Is your conscience at rest if once put to the test? You awake with a start to just the beating of your heart. Just one man beneath the sky, Just two ears, just two eyes.
The first coin below is an ultra/deep cameo and the second one is a cameo.
Look at the degree of frost on the devices and contrast between the frosted devices and the fields and you should see a big difference. For the record, I purposely picked a particularly amazing ultra/deep cameo example to make the point with and 1898 is a great year for that feature - the first coin is about as amazing as you will ever see frost and contrast-wise for its type and it looks in person, as it does in the images.
I have seen coins that would have gone DCAM but they were too darkly toned to get the grade. My guess is that the toning affected the contrast enough that the coin only went CAM. That's not to say that I haven't seen some fairly dark coins get a DCAM before, I owned a Barber Quarter DCAM in a PCGS holder that was pretty dark. A darkly toned coin would have to have DCAM+ contrast with super deep mirrors to make the grade.
That 1898 brought a staggering $33,000 and change or roughly four times what a nice cameo would bring and considerably more than a typical ultra/deep cameo would realize. But, as you can see, it has a VERY special look to it.

Thank you, Mark. Those two Morgans were a dramatic demonstration of the two. And the difference is why the deep cameos often command double or more the price of the regular cameos.
