Judging from that scan it looks at least 65, possibly 66. What is the grade. Is it graded by a TPG?

I am going to submit it to NGC next week. I think that it grades MS-64, as there are a few hairlines in the left obverse field and a small distraction on the cheek. The coin actually has more color than the scan would indicate. The tone is golden in color. I thought that it was a 65 shot 66 at first glance, since the luster is very heavy and the fields looked so clean. I think that it will go 64 and .............hopefully 65.

Most 1935's I've seen have die polish marks on them. It looks really nice to me!

NGC isn't exactly first in the hearts of people who collect Canadian. If you are thinking to slab it to facilitate resale--I think you might be able to get as much for it raw.

And I know that sounds like a knock on NGC--personally, I like them--but I have seen coins in their holders bring dumb low money on eBay in the Canadian realm. In fact, I kind of keep my eye out for them.

If holdering it for yourself and that's your TPG of choice--by all means.

    For technical grade it's ICCS.

Well, ICCS still is the most respected by Canadian collectors. And after them comes PCGS. I want to qualify this as coming from my experience. From what I've heard talking to collectors, and some prominent Canadian dealers. At the end of the day it's just another opinion. But, I've seen it borne out in auction results.

Now submitting to ICCS for Americans is a pain. So that leaves PCGS, and the disavantage there is NGC is faster and cheaper. But, PCGS is starting to have more of a presence in the Canadian coin market. If I really thought the coin had a shot at 65 I would go with them. But, if you feel pretty strongly it will 64--then in truth maybe NGC would work out just as well. You'd still get roughly the same which would probably go anywhere up to $150.

Go with PCGS or ICCS. Probably less hassle with PCGS. Even if NGC put the correct technical grade on the slab, the Canadian's have turned a blind-eye on NGC regarding Canadian grading. Actually as far as grading the Swiss coins which I'm accumulating, PCGS is the only choice. No one else comes close to understanding the intricacies of Swiss MSPL vs. Specimen strikes, especially not NGC. That's my 2 centimes, Geneva-speaking!! image

ICCS is a pain to submit to from outside Canada. I have heard some people have had difficulty convincing Canadian customs the coins are to be returned to the US so they don't charge a tax on them. Also, ICCS lives in the 1970s, no website or even email address that I'm aware of. And it seems they answer their phones for only 2 hours a day.

As Clank mentioned, there are some great buys in NGC certified Canadian coins. The Canadian collectors are very anti-NGC, mainly due to the influence of a couple Canadian dealers IMO, so the prices for these coins are quite reasonable. If buying, also look for coins in ICG holders. You can usually pick them up for a song. In the last few months I submitted three coins to ICG that came out of ICCS holds (I like hard plastic slabs) and all three graded at the same grade.

Ahhhh, but there is also the entrance into Canadian by one of our country's own least loved--who is making quite a presence on eBay touting NGC coins as being Pop 1 etc. etc. When yes, they have low pops, but only in NGC holders.

I don't even want to get into it anymore than that because they're trouble. And I don't want to be dragged into it one wit.

Thanks for the great info everyone. I will send the coins to PCGS instead of NGC. I was only going to use NGC because they are quicker than PCGS, but I guess that my patience will be rewarded by going with PCGS. How long can I expect to wait to for slabbing at PCGS?

I mentioned "coins" above, because I have been snapping up as much Canadian as I can lately. We will be rolling out a new web site in approximately 1 month. It is www.jaderarecoin.com and will include a nice assortment of foreign (many countries) coins/currency, ancients, and medals/exonumia, in addition to the usual U.S. stuff. Most of the foreign that I have been buying is Canadian, just because I like Canadian material. I bought some super cool toned half dimes through halves last month.

Thanks again for steering me towards PCGS. I would like to go with ICCS, but it sounds like a big pain.

I think PCGS will work out well for you. Because one important thing: ICCS grades very conservatively and they do not take "the eye appeal factor" into account with their grades. Whereas, you know PCGS will occassionaly give that bump to really nicely toned or eye appealing coins. ICCS stresses technical grading.

I don't even know what to tell you about turn around times at the moment. Last Canadian I sent in to PCGS was a single coin regular service and it took a month to ship and have it back to my door.
