Aboncom and SGS

I remember someone posting about this earlier and got curious and went to look at his Ebay sales. Everyone one of them were graded PR70 by SGS?

I decided to mess with him, so I e-mailed him about it. The following is copy and paste of our e-mails.

Dear aboncom,

I notice that all your coins are graded MS70 by SGS. Can you tell me who SGS is, and how you managed to get all your coins graded 70?

Hi,

SGS will only grade MS and Proof 69 and 70. SGS will not grade lesser coins.

Have a nice day and thanks for asking.

Thanks,

Thanks for answering. I'm kind of a novice coin collector and I don't have any graded coins, but I'm trying to learn about grading. How do you know if you have a 69 or 70 until you send it in?

Hi Cheryl,
The only coins we get back from SGS are either PR70 or PR69.

Thanks,

I don't think I ever got a straight answer from him. He says the only coins he gets back from SGS are either PR70 or PR69. What do they do with the others that don't make the grade?

  • My educational auction "Why Not to Buy SGS slabs!!!!" already has 3 bids. I don't want people to bid but learn how bad their grading is.

He blocked you from bidding just for asking a question?

How can he do that? (Or do you mean from bidding on HIS items?)

A seller can block whom ever they want

    For their own reasons

The deal is post a picture of a good coin and send what ever is at hand

I had asked about the picture (noting that they are all the same, for year and mint), no reply just blocked

HEY! my 68's must be ultra rare SGS slabs then. Or maybe they're FAKES!!! There must be some dastardly person out there counterfeiting SGS slabs!!!! image
  • I think the only thing SGS slabbed coins are good for is buying them reeeeally cheap and cracking out and putting in an album.

They did me. All I did was ask if the pictured coin was the one the winning bidder would receive. They never even responded to my eMail, but when I went to bid on an example to look at, I found out I was blocked.

    Cheryl,

The real reason all the coins that Abon sends to SGS grade 69 and 70 is that Abon and SGS are the same company.

If the seller's name is coinmovers or aboncom, you might as well save your money. These are not $10,000 , $20,000 , or $50,000 coins that they are selling.

Cameron, nice job with the auction listing.image

Hum, so if you send them a coin that they grade as MS68, they keep it? Good way to make some spare change. image

OR, maybe they only have two grades, PR 69 and PR70 (bad and better, ok and not so ok, ya & yup . . .) image

Back in the day, I was trying real hard to locate a gem 1969 Roosevelt dime, and Abon had one in a SGS holder. I looked at this several times before I bid. I won it for about $1.90 of something like that, and the jerk sent me a late payment warning after 3 days of not paying. The coin was received and it looks MS65 at best, with NO FB's of course. I took my chances to try and get a gem, but failed...No skin off my big toe!

Oh, and also, I shredded the beautiful green letter of authenticity!!!

    What a joke!

I have purchased a few of the SGS slabs from Aboncom and have found the folks at the company to be quite nice and quick about responding to emails. Seems like just the opposite that a lot of you are experiencing. Now, I bought the coins because I did not have an example of either of their two style of holders and the coins and reported grade were not really that relevant.

He was fairly quick about responding to my e-mails, it's just that he never answered my questions.......
