OT: Anybody know of any really good bass guitar players?

I played bass guitar in a rock band in high school, but was never really very good. Who are some good ones?

10,000 would be quite an impressive number ineed !!

When that lofty goal is reached it might be very interesting to find out....

How many different and unique collectors have set registered ??

How many different and unique collectors have sets with 10% or more completion ??

How many sets does a certain unique collector have with less than the only acceptable grade of an 8.0 ??

Toppsgun...the answer to your question is zero. The GAI registry will allow PSA cards to be added into their registry...no strings attached (your sets can be 100% PSA, SGC, or GAI; or mixed graded sets will be allowed as well).

grilloj - How is GAI going to have you register PSA or SGC cards without access to the cert numbers?
  • grilloj39grilloj39 Posts: 370 ✭✭
aro13...I honestly don't know the answer. Mike discussed this with me last month and I know they have a "working copy" of their price guide and registry. If they can make this make work I think it would be good for hobbyists and maybe bring the concept of "mixed-graded sets" more attractive to collectors.

once i get my 2 checklists for 1956 in psa 6 or 7...and get the 60 raw nm- nm/mt cards graded by psa....and get about 20 gai 7 cards crossed over to psa 6-7....then there will be another psa graded 1956 topps set online with scans with an average grade around 6.5 (most stars are well centered 7's and also have quite a few 7 commons (40 percent).

though i have an unofficial set without checklists and some graded by GAI/SGC/BVG...and 60 or so raw...i still feel its a long ways from getting posted

  • Lothar52,

Storing your collection that close to your washer/dryer is not recommended. In a random fit of rage, your wife could destroy years of wedded bliss.

OK, so let's play this out a little further into the future....

You have 3 grading companies with set registries. One allows only PSA cards. One allows any companies cards. And one has a service that allows a card to be graded by them, while staying in the original companies holder. So in theory.... with a little work, you could have the same cards listed on all 3 set registries at one time.

Is it just me, or can you envision the day coming soon where FUZZ will be standing in the middle of the ring with both fists raised in the air (like Mike Tyson), and 3 set registry belts (err.. awards) draped over his shoulders, while the National Anthem is playing in the background.

Set Registry Tittle Unification... it's coming!

The only real question is ... will Skinsfans ear still be whole when this happens?

It would be like holding the WBA, WBC, and IBF title.

Or in WWF, the WWF Champion, Tag-Team Champion, and Inter-Continental chamption (Tito Santana).

    Grillo-

I think you meant Pedro Morales. Tito Santana never held the World Title ( I'm pretty sure).

    Grillo,

Do you know if the GAI registry is limiting to PSA SGC and GAI? I can understand the rationale behind exclusion of ASA, CSA, PRO and the like, but BGS and SCD cards really should not be excluded. I also do not see how GAI will have access to PSA's database to confirm cert numbers.

  • grilloj39grilloj39 Posts: 370 ✭✭
Koby...no mention was made of BGS or any other grading company...strictly PSA and SGC. I don't know how they are going to work the certification # issue...will they use an honor system or somehow get access to the PSA and SGC database.

As you know, cert #'s can be looked up free of charge on a individual basis. Again, I have no clue.

Lothar,I hope you know that burst proof hoses are not exactly what they say they are.

I had come home at 4:30am to a 3/4 finished basement on it's way to being a swimming pool.

When it comes to standup bass, nobody can touch Curly Howard. He was the best.

GEMINT - I agree! I just saw again last week the Stooges episode where they were in court, they were jamming, Larry had a fiddle, Moe had a harmonica (that he swallowed) and Curly had the stand up bass - CLASSIC!!! image ...jay

I think the only bassplayer to ever have a card is Gene Simmons.Hopefully someone started the KISS registry set and can help me acquire a Mint Simmons someday.image

I'm to understand the GAI registry is still a work in progress,so eventually you'll be able to check it out.Kind of wierd to assemble a set not in uniform of all different companies holders, but I guess it's going to be like a Baskin Robbins type of concept.

  • BoopottsBoopotts Posts: 6,784 ✭✭
Gene Simmons may have stood onstage with a bass, but he wasn't a base player.

This may sound like I'm splitting hairs. But, in Gene's own words: 'This may be just be considered semantics, and I've always been anti-semantic'. image
  • grilloj39grilloj39 Posts: 370 ✭✭
Chris Squire from the Progressive Rock Band, "Yes." was the greatest bass player of all time. Curly Howard was second. I also thought Yosemite Sam dabbled a bit on the bass, he wasn't bad either (maybe #3).

How can you put Chris Squire over Danny Partridge and Peter Tork. image

Gene Simmons is actually a very good bassplayer who wrote some really cool lines like Cold Gin for example and Black Diamond and Duce or Fire house ( like Humble Pie).

I'd have to say that there are a number of horrible Kiss album filling songs on the early stuff but that is not entirely Gene;s fault.

  • grilloj39grilloj39 Posts: 370 ✭✭
Yeah, I like KISS but many of their songs are what we call in the card collecting hobby world as "fillers."

Yep. And one of the worst filler KISS songs ever was a Brian Adams song on Killers I believe.

YES Tormado is probably one of those filler albums that ranks up there with Kiss fillers.image

How bout PSA produces a message board set of the top 10 members, and gives away a slabbed set to Mr. 10,000.
Now who would make the cut to be a top 10 member? image ...jay

  • Jay -

Hot Tuna yes! Jorma Kaukona and Mr. Cassidy, both late of Jefferson Airplane. If I see you in Cleveland, remind me to tell you my Grace Slick story from 1977...

Mr. Entwistle paved the way for the "dive bomber", bassists as lead guitarists method of playing, God rest his soul. Boy, was he something special to see play. Not to mention a certasin lead guitarist named Pete...
