I'm particularly happy about this piece because the last time I bought an example of it (you heard right) was just before the last French postal strike. Since I had never lost anything from France before I foolishly didn't insure it... Well, there's always a first time for everything. This one's insured. image

A slight confession is that even though the jeton is dated 1796 Barre probably engraved it about 1830. The plain edges show that it was struck prior to 1832. The Revolution that was taking place there at the time obviously caused Barre to reach back to the first revolution and use its symbology (and to very nice effect)... image

It's unlikely that it was engraved in 1796 because Barre was only 3 at the time. image Despite that it fits the "look" of the Directorate period very well. The 1830 date is a guess on my part BTW. Forrer puts this piece between an 1829 and an 1832 medal in the list of the engraver's major works. The Society liked it so well they used the dies for over 100 years. One of the first things that happened after the restoration of the Napoleonic dies to the mint in late 1830 was the institution of edge markings in early 1832 on all silver and gold medals. Because of that I can date this example pretty closely.

And finally I think it's an interesting piece in that the major catalogers are all silent on it yet it is consistently placed in 1796 in all of the big collections.
