"Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you." -Luke 11:9
"Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might." -Deut. 6:4-5
"For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; He will save us." -Isaiah 33:22
It's unlikely that it was engraved in 1796 because Barre was only 3 at the time. Despite that it fits the "look" of the Directorate period very well. The 1830 date is a guess on my part BTW. Forrer puts this piece between an 1829 and an 1832 medal in the list of the engraver's major works. The Society liked it so well they used the dies for over 100 years. One of the first things that happened after the restoration of the Napoleonic dies to the mint in late 1830 was the institution of edge markings in early 1832 on all silver and gold medals. Because of that I can date this example pretty closely.
And finally I think it's an interesting piece in that the major catalogers are all silent on it yet it is consistently placed in 1796 in all of the big collections.

Come on over ... to The Dark Side!

I personally can butcher the French language so badly that Parisians give up and talk to me in English...
