All-Time Great Quarterbacks

1999 PACIFIC KURT WARNER

This inclusion just doesn't seem right. Does anyone disagree? Can cards be removed from a registry set like this?

Comments

  • if Kurt is in the QB set, Terrell Davis should be in the RB set.

or if theyre going only on Super Bowl winners, how about add Mark Rypien?
  • Rypien did have a decent career however, I agree.

He was a 2X NFL MVP and a Super Bowl MVP when he was included in this set. Kurt will be released from the Rams after June 1st, so let's see what happens then.
  • I'm with sixdart. The only knock on Kurt Warner (keep in mind that I'm a huge fan of his) is that he has tried to play injured. The rams might be wearing another super bowl ring right now if Martz would have gone with Warner instead of Bulger. Bulger's numbers were mediocre at best. I have to wonder what a healthy Warner could have accomplished with this team.

I'm way off topic here so I would leave him there unless he flops this year and then remove him.

  • In the end he may belong in the "All-Time Great" category but it just seems premature. He has had two great years but I would think an argument could be made for Tom Brady using that criteria. Although I hate to admit it (me = Titan's fan), Peyton Manning would seem more suitable in the set than Warner. However, they say opinions are like... well you know.
  • Currently in Tokyo on a business trip and I just about blew sake out my nose when I read this one! There is no way that Kurt Warner should be in any All-Time list.

Currently, he is not in the Top 50 All-Time in any major category for QBs. Some QBs that are missing from the list include: John Brodie (Top 25 in all 3 major categories of completions (22nd), TDs (18th), and Yards (23rd); Boomer Esiason - 10th in Completions, 10th in yards, and 11th in TDs All-Time (and single-handedly took the BENGALS to the Super Bowl); and here's probably the most underrated - Dave Krieg - don't laugh as he is rated #8 in TD Passes between Montana and Jurgenson, 9th in Completions ahead of Aikman, Kelly, Young, Unitas, and 10th All-Time in total yards. There could also be great cases made for 7-Time Pro Bowler Jack Kemp and 4-Time Pro-Bowler Roman Gabriel. Everyone else on the list is very deserving.

I agree! Kurt Warner should be in his prime in the NFL and he's not even a starter.

  • Jay,

Will do -- I wrangled a pair of tickets for the sold-out Yomiuri Giants vs. Yokohama BayStars game tomorrow night at the Big Egg (Tokyo Dome). If they have schedules or programs they'll be on their way to you this weekend!

I actually asked PSA about removing this card from the set about a year ago. I was told that once a card is added it will not be removed. Has anyone ever had a card removed from a PSA Registered Set?

I definitely think he was added pre-maturely. Maybe (if he gets to be a starter again) he will be worthy of addition ot the set, but I guess he was the hot commodity whenever this set was initially requested...

I think the litmus test for an all-time greats set has to be, if the player retired today, would he be considered an all-time great? Despite Warner's QB rating, I think the answer would be a resounding "no." I understand PSA is resistant to removing cards from sets, but heck, the base Pacific is not even his best RC image.

Nope it sure isn't...Same can be said for the 1961 Topps Don Maynard in the WR set. This card was also included in my e-mail asking about hwo the determined which cards go in which sets. It's basically up to the person requesting the set. PSA gets the request, and then supposedly Joe Orlando approves and/or makes changes. I have had small changes made to sets I requested, but for the most part, they are 99% whatever i asked for.

Warner simply doesn't deserve to be on it, but he is. So you can either choose to buy the card for the sake of completing the set, or you can choose not to complete the set. Luckily, the card is very cheap, so it's not a big deal. In my case, something like the Hall of Fame/Player/Coach/Admin set, there are cards that i do NOT collect, such as coach cards that are very expensive(Landry and Paul Brown for example). I have simply chosen not to purchase the cards, and I know I won't be completing the set to 100%. Maybe one day I will, but for now, my collection comes first, cards i need JUST because the Set Registry says so come 2nd..

  • I'm a big K. Warner fan but have to agree that his inclusion was premature. Witht that said I'm STILL looking for his 99 Score Supllemental RC graded PSA 9 or SGC 96 or better.

    Frank,

I've got his 1999 CE 1st Place #201 RC #'d of 500 in SGC 96/9 Mint. The Supp RC is tough to find mint.
  • My question about this set is why is Warren Moons 1985 Topps card his rookie card instead of his 1983 Jogo Cfl or 1981 Jogo black and white his rookie?
  • Sixdart- I've been looking for the 1999 Score Supp. Warner RC for 4 years. I've seen the pop reports increase in PSA and SGC, but haven't seen any for sale. Ironically the 1 and only bad experience I've had on Ebay was on this card. Bought it for $25 and seller never delivered, never returned emails and avoided all my phone calls. I should have known it was too good to be true.

The Warren Moon CFL cards are considered Regional issues. Another example would be 1961 Pakcers Lake to Lake Ray Nitschke..Its a regional card, so it's not recognized as his rookie.

  • For those interested, BJ handled this very wisely by having the people that have registered quarterback sets vote on it. The Warner card was removed today after the vast majority agreed it should be removed.

  • I was in the minority unfortunatelyimage
Now can someone sell me his 1999 Score Supplemental RC in PSA 9or SGc 96

  • Doh! Were you #1 prior to him being removed?

I think the next order of business should be getting the '61 Topps Maynard in the WR set changed to the '61 Fleer. I already e-mailed PSA about this.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

Maybe they will send out another poll...I will definitely vote for the 1961 Fleer, since all other cards in the set are the TOP RC of each player. The Topps Maynard is not his most valuable RC, the Fleer is...

i agree.. i just picked up the 83 jogo on ebay and think it belongs in this set over the topps card. Isn't Jogo a nationally released set in canada? its not like its some very obscure set like some regional sets.

Jogo isn't produced in large enough quantities to be considered for the all-time sets. Also, as previously mentioned, '81 Jogo is Moon's official pre-rookie, not '83.

I would vote yes on Warner.

i think warner should be considered. But i would like to see his 1995 WLF Barnstormers card. I'm a sucker for xrc. perhaps i should start an all time XRC set.

PSA only uses cards listed in the Beckett Ultimate Rookie Card Encyclopedia for rookie card sets, and all Warner cards listed are from 1999.

So that wouldn't be an option.
