not me. after all, they're just morgans.

actually, for all we know, these were crap coins to begin w/, & the seller just shined em up to a consistent look. the fact is, some collectors PREFER that to natural coins.

Perhaps he hasn't found a deal yet where he could get screwed over as bad as this one?

My eyes! The goggles - they do nothing!

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

When I was 14 years old, my uncle gave me a circ. 1889-O Morgan as a gift. That was a very nice gesture, as I didn't have much of anything in my colelction besides circ. Lincolns, and I was thrilled. But he cleaned it up good with a scouring pad first!!!!! Aaaarrrgh!!!!!!

Someone should email the seller and offer 3x the current bid IF they can have them PCGS certified first image

...he's only stating the blatently obvious. it's a self-serving move--if he didn't come clean he'd be laughed off ebay.

  • 32 coins * 0.77344 Oz pure silver each * 6.92 spot value = $172.013 in silver. 2.065 troy pounds. Pretty decent weight wise. More silver than I currently have.

    So, 595.00 - 172.013 = $422.987 loss.

But at least he has something he can hand to his/her grand childter as keepsakes. Besided, 32 morgan dollars. That's 30 more than I have, lol.

Ya, but you have to love that "just minted" look. Serious collectors like that. image

I saw that auction too. I thought that it was very refreshing to see a seller tell you that the coins were polished. I've seen all too many that won't say anything negative about any of their coins for sale. Way to much to pay for those coins though, I'm surprized they sold for that much.

I have an almost complete Lincoln set that has been polished clean image They are actually starting to tone over again. My father gave them to me many, many years ago. I'm not sure where he got them or if he did the polishing... It's missing only the high dollar key dates (1909 S VDB, and the 1922 no D). image

But I got them from Dad and they will stay in my collection and be passed down to my daughter some day.

This seller is the KING! Over a year now every coin this seller offers, "has a nice shine". What a dope! Twice over the last six months I have emailed the seller and asked why he likes to ruin so many coins. He says he buys them all that way. I guess I will offer to sell him a nice original VG half just so I can for once see just one nice uncleaned coin for sale by them. Then I can go to my grave a happy, content man. image

I believe the seller uses the Shine-o-matic XK9900 industrial size rock tumbler with the 15hp motor and still manages to burn out one or two a year of these machines cleaning these babies!

I was at the public library earlier this week doing research on early United States coins when I came across a book in the numismatic section titled something to the effect of "How to Clean Your Coins." It must have been twenty or thirty years old, if not older. The first page I turned to was describing how to use vinegar to clean your coins. I'll have to go back sometime and see what other great suggestions it has to offer. Let's face it we are caught in a time warp where cleaning is taboo, but it has not always been so in the past.

Yes, these coin are really gross, but you know what? Some of the stuff that going on today to make "BU" and "AU"coins into "blazers" is almost as bad. I can't tell you how many early gold coins I've seen in the past year in NGC and PCGS holders that had their surfaces worked on to make them shine. It's a darn shame that modern collectors and the dealers who sell to them can't leave stuff alone.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
