What we do (besides collect cards)

As a newbie, I've really enjoyed seeing pictures of the board members. If it wouldn't blow our anonymity TOO much (more than a picture?) I'd be interested in seeing what we all do in our other (read: daily) lives: Occupations and interests (besides card collecting).

I'm a sales rep and branch manager for air conditioning products, serving the commercial construction industry. While I'm waiting for card auctions to close, I play guitar in a '60s British Invasion tribute band.

What d'yall do?

  • I'm an attorney in a very small office (5 lawyers) of a very large law firm (about 1100 worldwide) doing commercial and real estate litigation.

Besides saints stuff and football sets, I collect signed baseballs, courthouse postcards and local historical items. I have also been doing genealogy for 25+ years.

All of that is trumped by trying to keep up with my 6 year old daughter and 4 year old son.

I work in Intellectual Property (Patents) full time during the day and go to George Washington Law School at night. Before school, I enjoyed drag racing (see avatar) and going to Las Vegas & Atlantic City every couple months.
  • I'm a software developer for a company that deals with 401K's and Retirement Plans. Just got this gig a few months ago after a 8 month layoff.

Aside from collecting Nolan Ryan cards, I enjoy playing computer and video games, and as a pet project I am currently developing my own game. I also live and die in Cubby blue, and am holding out hope that Mark Prior will pitch before this year is over.

    Nice thread;

    A little about myself...

I am homeless and currently unemployed (can you say that after 6 years?)... I haven't seen my 38 (or is that 83?) children in years... most of the mothers (those I can recall) have restraining orders aginst me... my other hobbies include collecting big cardboard boxes, chasing old ladies, and collecting tin cans...

When I am not dumpster diving for my next meal, I generally panhandle at bus stations or sleep in the park.

I don't have many friends due to my attire and lack of hygiene... one day I stumbled into the library and found my way to this web site while searching for homeless chat groups... didn't find any so i joined this one... it has become a great way for me to make friends as people can't pre-judge me by my less than desirable odor and appearance... oops, have to go, the head librarian is heading this way...

But on TV, I play a graphic designer married with a wonderful wife and two beautiful little boys... it is a remarkable life!

    Nice thread!

I'm a part-time software consultant, and I play with cards when I'm not consulting. I've had a football card collection for about 15 years, and I started selling them online about 3 years ago.

Outside of those things, I do ordinary stuff with my free time: bike, hike, work on the house, drink beer. What I love to do most is travel outside the country, and I've been trying to make at least one trip annally. Two years ago I went on two trips with Habitat for Humanity, and I'm itching to go on another one.

Here's my favorite picture of me: it's in Ethiopia with a group of street kids. It's certainly not my favorite because I look good, but it reminds me of an amazing day.

I think my love of art is a key reason why old tobacco cards are my favorite.

I'm an engineer at a nuclear power plant working on post-9/11 security upgrades. I have a bachelors in nuclear engineering, a mechanical engineering PE license, and an MBA, but my work these days is almost entirely civil structural engineering. Blast analysis, ballistic protection, that sort of thing.

Married, no kids yet. Other than football cards I love to play blackjack and texas hold 'em poker, and I love to build stuff (metal, wood, fiberglass, anything I can get my hands on). I like RTS and RPG video games, and my wife and I go ocean kayaking in the summer. I have about a million other hobbies but those are the ones that take most of my time and money.

  • I'm a computer systems analyst for county government.

    In addition to cards.....

I collect antique peanut roasters (the kind street vendors used in the late 19th and early 20th centuries), hit and miss farm utility engines (these were used to grind corn, power butter churns, make electricity, etc before many farms were electrified), vintage salesman samples (these were usually smaller versions of the real thing when the real thing was too large for the salesman to carry with them on the road, they were usually fully functional and very well made by a master craftsman that worked for the company), and 19th century advertising related to my other interests.

Tried uploading some pics I have here at work of some items in my collection, but they went over the 50K limitation, image, waaaaaa.

I teach special ed at an elementary school, mainly working with students with emotional disorders.

In addition to collecting cards, I collect rock posters (mainly Phish, of course) and like playing video games and listening to music. I suppose my wife, child (20 mos.) and mortgage are at least somewhat indicative of being an adult, but for the most part, I'm basically enjoying a very prolonged adolescence. Hopefully it continues for at least another 30 years.

When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
