NGC online pop report shows an AU55 and a Pr 66??? I saw the Walton coin at the ANA and even though it looked better than I expected I would have thought 62-63 tops.

Article in Coin World announced that NGC just graded the Hawaii 5-0 coin as a 64. But no mention about the Walton specimen.

    Hello all-

My question to the board is . . . would it matter? Since it was deemed authentic, would a "grade" by NGC, PCGS, ANACS, ICG, or some other TPG really affect the value of the coin? There are only FIVE specimens known and anyone with even a modest amount of intelligence who wishes to purchase the coin will know how it ranks with its four siblings . . . regardless of the grade on the holder.

  • It dosen't matter and most of us know that. The question was if it was slabbed.

It might matter to some potential buyers. Call them stupid if you like, but the auctioneer will take their bids.

I would not call the potential buyer stupid, but if you were going to spend a couple million dollars on a commodity, such as a coin, and you do not know the market, that is not wise. This is particularly true when only 5 of those commodities exist.

It was slabbed, as a sample, by our favorite third tier.

It has not been slabbed. It was still in the Walton holder at the Portland show 3 weeks ago. NGC recently graded the Olsen coin, which means the PR64 in the PCGS pops is no longer in a PCGS holder. The PF66 in the NGC pops is the Eliasberg coin, which is currently in a PCGS PR66 holder. The AU coin in the NGC pops is the McDermott Specimen, which is in the ANA collection (which was also at the Portland ANA, but is no longer in the holder).

I saw the Walton specimen at the Portland ANA also, I could not get a good look at it because of my eyesight with glasses on/off. The fellow "guarding" it was rather interesting. I said hello to him and got no response except for a dirty look, he was rather stoic, kind of like one of the British troops that guard the castleimage------------------BigE

  • I think NGC gave the Walton coin a tentative grade, but it has not been slabbed.
