Can you say....PURPLE??? (Large Pix)

A couple of coins that I picked up at the Dallas/Mid-Cities show last week....(also - a beginer's try at getting coin pix from the digital camera):

A 1955 1D proof (obverse):

The reverse:

Picked this one up because the toning highlights the sails and the ship:

  • I bought 3 sets of the '55 proofs - 1/4d thru 1d - and a 1/2d and 1d from a '54 set. All of them have the blueish-purple toning to some degree.

And yes, the South Africa bug has bit hard. I cleaned out two dealers of all of the South African copper that they had... some really nice uncirculated reds from the 50's and some circulated stuff all the way back to the turn of the century (and a couple of those had real subtle toning that I am still trying to capture with the camera). I figure that as long as can get the coppers at a reasonable price, I will be snatching up as much of them as I can!

I will try to get some pix of the1/2d's later this week (just depends on how much the baby cooperates image )
