An awesome display - 1883 proof set

So often on these boards we see single coins. And so often they are awesome coins, each deserving in their own merits.

But there is something special about a nice set, and you don't see them displayed here too often. Baley's type sets come to mind and so do Tonelover (Jon's) SLQ's. Here is a copper, nickel, silver proof set from 1883 in Proof 66 to 68. The eye appeal is magnificent and adding to that the cool denominations and changes in the year, is a really great display. I could only imagine how amazing it would be if someone decided to extend this into the gold as well by adding a $1, $2.50, $3, $5, $10, and $20. Yes, that proof-only date $20 would be a pricey item, but imagine a 16-piece proof set all from th same date! I found out about the set below in an e-mail from RCNH if you want to follow-up.

  • Nice! I love a proof set with 4 different nickel coins image I don't know if this is the same set but I saw a set like this at the Santa Clara show.

Blade: That's a great looking 1883 proof set. Thanks for sharing it with us!

I had forgotten about the 3 different 5 Cent (Nickel) Coins of that year -- i.e. the 1883 Shield Nickel along with the 2 Liberty Nickels, although it makes "No Cents". image

Seeing that reminded me to review my own proof type coins and unc type set. I'd better get busy with them! image

My only minor critique - if I bought this set, the first thing I would do is upgrade the Indian cent to a Red example, possibly with cameo for the eye appeal. All of the other coins are so amazing, that one just doesn't stand out like it should. Minor complaint though!

Out of curiosity, does anyone around here have a complete date proof set of pre-1933 copper, nickel, silver, and gold proofs? Pre-1892 would be especially cool.

  • If those coins were together since 1883 I would never switch out that cent!!!! These sets have been dipped and everything else to try to get the coins into higher grade holders. To have an original set is very valuable to me even if one of the coins isn't as nice at the others.

    I do have a set, 1907, but I don't have the gold.

    Carl,
I would agree if this was a documented complete original set. However, since RCNH did not mention it, I'm assuming at least part of it was not original. Agree it would be coolest to keep the original coins together. The silver coins sure look like a match.
