There is no simple answer to this question since much depends on future events
and trends. It's possible that there will continue to be large increases in the num-
ber of people who collect these and grade will become less important to many of them
in the future. In this case lower mintage would be more valuable so older scarcer dates
and proofs would do well. There could be continuing interest in updating the many older
sets in existence but it's possible that collectors will find circulated late-date coins to be
sufficient.
It seems most likely that there will be more demand in the future and that as in the past
it will favor mint state coins as opposed to circs. It also seems likely that at least the
newer proofs will be in demand since they are different and have a different mint mark.
If collectors seek nice attractive uncs then some of the mint state coins will do quite well
since some dates are not common in nice attractive unc. Proof coins look extremely nice
in very high grade but this is an acquired taste since there is relatively little range in
proof quality and it takes some learning to see it.
One thing is certain though and that is as a rule mint state coins tend to be scarcer than
proofs. While this may not be as true for nickels (and cents) as it is for other US coins, it
is very true if you look only at nice attractive specimens, gems, or choice gems.

I think that high grade and better grade full step Jeffs are your best bet. Why not just get ones that you like, though, and not worry about the future value? Coins are best enjoyed as a hobby, for pleasure!
Edited to add....Littlejohn....collect what you like....it's all good....
Any thoughts on the Full Step Market?
NICKEL TRIUMPH NO STEPS
Its nice to see another jeffery collector, so long as you dont snipe what Im bidding on Im holding alot of high grade and very sought after varieties
in the jefferson arena, from the high grade SMS (94&97) to the off color ones you generally dont hear of(71-no s in pr68cam, 42D/D in au55 ETC).
I feel the jefferson series is just comming into the light, but even if it didnt Id still buy every example that catches my eye, just cant seem to get enough of jeffery
I believe by xmas time there will be huge indicator as to where they are headed....one can only sit back and wait.
oh and buy every high grade wild example you can afford

Some if not a lot have in the past (as I have experianced Jefferson Prejudice personably) but the time's, they is ah changin, especialley in the past few years. Localey now on Bid Board night, I get deluged with questions on this nickel or look at this 68d or this or that, as an appreciation has and is still is developing with this series. Is this good or bad ?, Its great on one hand, but on the other, is I haven't bought any nickels in over a year and it's kinda frustrating. I myself do not have a registry set, but I'm proud to say that one of my former pieces made it into the top registry set. For now when I get a chance to wanna feel like a kid, I pull out my Dansco (#1) and the blue Whitmans (#2,3,4,5,6's) and revaluete my downgrades or upgrades of my treasure.
Although it's been years since someone at a show or bidnight has asked what I collect, and would say Oh!, and turn or walk away in response to "Jefferson Nickels", that haunting scene still lingers, then I giggle.

I AM STILL NEW AT THIS.WHAT IS bidnight

<< <i>HI
I AM STILL NEW AT THIS.WHAT IS bidnight
LITTLEJOHN >>
Bidnight is the night the bidboard closes here locally at one of our fine established coin shops, a bidboard is usually a wall of the shop where members will place coins on a card and hang them up upon said wall, where other members may inpect and evaluate the coins and place a bid for the coin on the card. Bidnight is usually a jampacked event as members can pickup there winning bids in person if fortunate to have not been sniped, and if so can see who the snipe is.
Snipe is a person who at the last second swoops in and outbids you in a secretive type manner and at a minimum bid increment with no time left for you to respond to counterbid.
But unlike on ebay you can see what they drive (which by the way I do not advocate in any manner whatsoever) and slash there tires next week.
So I've been iold.
