If, as you say, it has beautiful luster - which the image does not indicate - I could see it getting in to an MS65 holder. If it doesn't have the luster, than I'd agree with your grade of MS64.
Thanks Russ! It compares very favorably to the one you showed. I am still trying to learn how to take pictures. I really appreciate your input. Do you think that it might be worth getting slabbed?

What would you grade this one?

The 70-D IMO is a 64, which is also where I would grade the 68-D. Having said that, if Russ thinks different that I do about a Kennedy, I'd put my money on Russ every time.
If you are in the Western North Carolina area, please consider visiting our coin shop:
the pictures aren't bad but looks like they are taken looking directly into the light. Put the light and camera at different angles and the luster will come out better.
There are two problems with the grading assessments we sometimes see. First, is that in a large image any nicks dings or marks are magnified many times larger than they actually appear on the coin. This skews our perception, and therefore our grades.
The second is grading strictly based on those marks - something that I am frequently guilty of doing, but am trying to get better at. The grade of a coin is more than just number of dings. Luster and eye appeal are a major component of the grade. Thus a "technical" MS64 is frequently graded - and rightfully so - at MS65 because it just plain looks good.
The coin I posted was graded MS66 by PCGS. I'd note, though, that I don't personally agree with the grade and believe it to be an MS65.
Thanks Guys you all have been really helpful. I think that I might get my coin slabbed just for the heck of it. I have never sent any coins in for slabbing. I have to save a bit of cash up first. My wife and are expecting our first child (a baby boy- Dylan Edward Dunn will be his name) and money is and will be tight. I really do appreciate this forum. I am still learning every time I visit here. It seems everyone has a specialty in their own area. Russ is the guru of Kennedys and I really value his opinion.
The 70-D came out of a mint set that I had purchased from Alpine Numismatics for $13. Dave had a bunch of Proof and mint sets on clearance there. I also bought 3 1976-S 3 piece silver mint sets from him. They were pretty nice as well.
I have read on here that the grading standards are different for the Blue Ikes. Is that true and does that apply to the coins of the 1976-S Mint sets?
Sometimes I feel ignorant asking a lot of questions. But I am really learning a lot and I appreciate everyone on here for their knowledge and patience.
rdunnit - Congrats on your first child! Nothing I've ever experienced comes close to the feeling I have as I watch my daughter grow. As for the slabbing of the Kennedy, since it's only about a $60 coin, if you want to get it slabbed, try talking to a dealer near you (if possible). He/she may take it and put it in their next submission and save you some $'s. I'd tell them about the soon-to-be new addition to your family and he/she may do it gratis!! My dealer has done this for me from time to time (and I don't even have a good "story!")
Best of luck!

Thanks Mike. Actually it is my second child and Michelle and I's first. I don't get to see my daughter much because that is the last control my ex has over me left. I have battled for over 2 1/2 years in court and since Kansas generally chooses the mother over the father it has been very frustrating. I didn't want full custody just better visitation. Well sorry for getting off topic, but it still hurts and I just needed to vent. I will save some cash and pay the membership just to get the great feeling of having my own coins slabbed. I am just taking my time at finding just the right coins for me. It is people like you with your nice words that make me proud to be a member of this forum.

A 1970-D in MS65 is a $60 to $70 coin in the current market.

<< <i>Is the mark I see on the cheek really on the slab? >>
Nope. It's on the coin. But, in hand it's not nearly as visible as it is in a 600 pixel wide image.
