What's the best (and worst) grading service in your opinion?

Just for fun, in your opinion, state please what grading service is your favorite, and for what reason. And which one you dislike the most, and the reason for that. It will become good information for everyone on boards, and I could use some more knowledge on less popular TPG services.

Thanks!

Seeing that it's not an exact science, I dunno.. Grading to me comes in second, I look at the coins and it doesn't matter what holder it's in, soo long as the price is right and the coin looks nice, I buy it. Though I should mention I like to buy raw rather then slabbed.
  • PCGS number 1. The worst is a tie between ACG and NTC, because of the gross overgrading and not noting problem coins.

#1 PCGS (unless you need to slab a genuine but potential problem coin, in which case ANACS)

#2 NGC (which would be #1 if you coin is in need of a doctor)

#3 Old PCI, in slabs with green insert borders

    ...

Last: Hotly contested, Perhaps the title of this thread should be What's the best (and worst) well-known grading service. Two years ago this honor would have gone to ACG, last year NTC (New Mistrust). My nomination for this year is TruGrade, although they may never rise to the popularity levels of their competitors for this title. This field is now crowded by many self-slabbers using Coin World holders, but they will never garner the ignominy of their larger bottom-feeder competitors.

the all time best grading service to me in my opinion

is in two parts in other words a combination of factors

part one///////// i need to see a coin in a slab of ANY service

part two//////// i need to have it "michael approved" by myself

then that is the best grading service for me

it is on a case by case basis

the worst grading service is also on a case by case basis when i see a coin in any holder i do not like that is the worst service to me

Best: Me. I grade my own coins, I make my own mistakes, I don't care what PCGS, NGC, ANACS, ACG, etc says, unless they agree with me.

Worst: _______ Sucks!!!! You fill in the Blank.

    Best: PCGS
    Worst: acg (far the worst)

    I only buy PCGS slabs....

  • I think the issue has been settled:

    LINK

ACCUGRADE WAS RATED #1 AS THE MOST CONSISTENT GRADING SERVICE BASED ON THE NOVEMBER 17, 2003 ISSUE OF COIN WORLD REGARDING THEIR RECENT SURVEY. SEE PAGES 62 THRU 66. PCGS WAS RATED LAST WITH THE MOST SCATTERED GRADING........

And don't forget that their value is what the Collectors Universe price guide quotes:

Collector Universe Price 401 slabs is $17,200

  • I think they all do some things very well.

For example, SGS "America's Grading Service," has nice shiny gold stickers that hold their slab togetherimage

ACG is the best. If you want proof, just ask them.image

At times I am convinced it is not the slabbers, or grades assigned that is a problem, its the GRADING SYSTEM that sucks!

  • Sorry Far .. err Fatman, it was an honest mistake I swear! image

PS: Nice collection! I saw your HUGE collection of slabbed coins on a table of yours that you posted on another thread. Fatman the "r" in Fartman was really only a mistake. My mind was drifting thinking about something else ..
  • What's the website for NTC? It was the worst on your list, I gotta see how bad it really is image . I went to PCIs website and found out they not only slab coins, (They do a crappy job at that already) they autheticate other stuff like autographs, pictures, etc. So coins isn't one of their specialties.

My service of choice is PCGS. I like the consistency and generally the more conservative approach to thier grading. Whether or not folks want to belive it or not, thier coins usually bring more money and have increased marketability at time of re-sale or when I decide to upgrade.

However, they do make mistakes as any one else. I have seen some coins that I ask "how in the world did they slab this coin, etc". Whether it be a dog or overgraded IMO. Sometimes, I also think they get a little too liberal with some of the key-date coins in selected series.

As far as NGC, I think they are a very reputable service, however, IMO, they have a tendency to grade a few series with a little more evidence of light cleaning, ec. (Barbers). Also, in the Morgan dollar series, I have seen NGC graded coins next to PCGS coins and felt the PCGS were of a little better quality on average, but not always.
