Cards with great stadium shots in background

I just got this card in the mail, 1960 Larry Osborne with a great shot of then Briggs Stadium in the background. Any of you set collectors out there know of any good "stadium" shot cards? It could be an interesting subset to collect. I'd love to see some pics!

Can someone help me link this pic so it shows up on the thread?

  • I don't know how accurate they are, but I've always thought that the '52 Bowmans had great stadium shots, even if they are not photos technically speaking.
Building sets: 1888 N18 Parasol Drill, 1888 N19 Pirates of the Spanish Main, 1911 T68 Heroes/Men of History (PSA 4+), 1952 Bowman Baseball (PSA 6+), Pre-war British soccer sets

The 1972 Topps Angels has quite a few shots taken from the stadium.

Here is one of my favorites with a nice big halo over Billy's head:

  • Sorry, no photo to display. But the 1959 Bazooka Mickey Mantle has a sweet Yankee Stadium backdrop.
  • 1971 Topps #485 Ken McMullen has a great shot of two of the monuments in old Yankee Stadium's left center field.

I have the image but am unable to upload.

Hard to believe that the monuments used to be in fair territory - great card.

A few I can think of...

1960 Topps Mickey Mantle ('60 Topps must have even more)

1963 Topps Mickey Mantle (probably shouldn't be included in the
list since it's such a small portion of Yankee Stadium, but it's
the most recognizable feature of the stadium -- the arches.)

1958 Topps WS Batting Foes (Mantle & Aaron)

1985 Topps Mark McGwire RC (does anybody know which stadium is in
the background? I've heard that it's Tiger Stadium, but I'm not sure.)

1952 Bowman Stan Musial (mattconroy called it! Not a real photo, but
the stadium background helps the card become a true classic.)

    1950 Bowman Duke Snider

Any of the 1933 Delongs (another stretch, I know, but it's a stadium)

Is that an alien forcefield or just that fun loveable mylar baggie inside the holder.

  • I was going to give a boring, generic reply about the wonderful background stadium shots in the 1957 set, but the pix of Murcer fielding a ball in LF behind the monuments, the shot of Koufax, and the wonderful shot of Gil Hodges in Yankee Stadium before a WS game (note the bunting in the background) were all too much!

Didn't someone recently ask if this boad had run out of topics??

    SW

Edited to add: What's that Brooklyn player pointing to in the right background in the Hodges pix? Jimmy Hoffa? Oh wait, 20 years too soon... Sorry!
  • There are thousands, but the '57 Charlie Neal comes to mind first. The Ebbets Field scoreboard, etc. The Covington--same deal. 57's in general really capture the feel of NEW YORK baseball of the era.

  • Then there's the 1964 Topps Ray Sadecki stadium background shot ... image Sorry, I don't have a scan but if somebody else does, its truly a classic.

  • 1957 Topps Johnny Podres

  • Steve,

In the Hodges postcard, it looks like the guy in the suit is writing something while balancing the paper on his leg. The other player (Reese ?) is merely watching him write. Was this picture taken AFTER the game, as it appears that Hodges' uniform is dirty. Notice the infield dirt on his left hip and thigh.

Also, in the 57 Podres card, notice the "Schaefer" beer sign in the background. The "h" and "e" are actually lights which would indicate whether the play was a hit or an error.

    Joe,
I thought perhaps the guy was having a wardrobe malfunction.
Also remember the distance number on the left-center fence in the background was something like 461'

as has been observed here, Old Wrigley Field in Los Angeles, now a fine shopping center.

I have always liked many of the 1975 Topps Red Sox cards shot in Fenway... the Rick Burleson comes to mind with that old "Buck Printing" sign clear as day over the CF wall (the color scoreboard is in that spot today)! Sorry, no scan. Maybe someone will oblige!

This was taken at Forbes Field. You can see the University of Pittsburgh Cathedral of Learning off to the left and the score board in the right background.

It seems to me that the New York and California stadiums would be easier to find on a card. I love the Ebbetts Field scoreboard shot on the 57.

  • Most stadium shots were taken in Yankee Stadium and Ebbetts Field, usually when the visiting teams came to New York. It just made it easier on travel for the photographers. In the late 60's early 70's cards (especially 1971 Topps) most photos are taken in either Yankee Stadium or Shea Stadium.

If the Cardinals collectors out there look at your 1971 Cardinals cards, it seems like every Cardinal card is an action shot in Shea Stadium, all most likely from the same game!

I always find it interesting when photographers have used the same shot on different cards. The most unique one has occurred in both 1971 Topps sets - the regular issue and Greatest Moments. I believe it is the 1971 Joe Morgan regular issue card (#264) and the Jerry Grote Greatest Moments card (#54) have the same photo, but are cropped differently. If someone has images they could post of these two cards it would be greatly appreciated by myself and the other board members.

great thread here - I too love those '57 shots of Ebbets, especially the Neal card.

Murcer - no need to wait for my death; I've got a '59 Drysdale that's almost as nice (Psa 5) if you want to trade that '60 Koufax....

While not a stadium shot at all, I'm sure you're all familiar with this card. Yep, nothing gets me into the mood for football better than a background shot of a street! Hey, is that an old T-Bird in the background?

  • No wonder why Musial was such a great ballplayer....he was much bigger than everybody else!

Gotta love those steel girders. I remember going to the old Yankee Stadium as a kid ( I was actually at the last game, courtesy of Phil Rizzuto!) and sometimes stuck behind those big poles. Not that it mattered because these were the 1971-74 Yankees, not exactly the Bronx Bombers! When you have Jerry Kenney, Gene Michael and Celerino Sanchez in the same lineup...other teams' pitchers were volunteering to pitch against those Yankee teams.

  • Maybe someone can help me as my scanner just isnt working correctly.

But I have always liked the Topps Giant card of Johnny Callison that shows the outfield double deck of old Shibe Park. It has the colorful advertisements on the outfield wall as well as the signs on top of the roof.

Great card of an old park.

    Is this also of Shibe?

    image
  • Thanks Jrink - Yes that second picture is Shibe also. I believe thats an Alpo ad image.

I always thought it strange that the 1969 Topps card of Sammy Ellis (#32) showed an old picture of him with the Polo Grounds in the background. That park had been torn down for nearly 6 years when that card came out!!

I remember Murcerfan had a great regional card of Dusty Roades (I think) at Crosley Field. While there are tons of cards of Ebbetts and the Polo Grounds, the cards of Crosley, Shibe, Sportmans Park and Forbes are all a little more rare.

I know the backdrop isn't a stadium shot, but i always loved the '64 Philadelphia Browns cards, where the photographer shot the picture by the parking lot. ...jay

  • Yes, that is Pete Rose off second base in the 71 Chris Short card. On #355 Bud Harrelson in the same set, Harrelson is tagging out a runner attempting to steal. The pitcher on the mound has his back turned but it is unmistakably Nolan Ryan.
