I just received this today. I'm not much of a copper guy, so I would appreciate your thoughts on it.

Reverse is pleasant, obv has a tumor or evil twin growing on the forehead.

Pushkin, the images are extremely accurate. The coin does have the huge difference in color from one side to the other.

It looks like someone used a chemical mix such a Deller's Darkener and put it on a light bulb for too long, hence the carbon spot - it doesn't look like a natural carbon spot. Most attempts to "doctor" fail badly and are easy to detect. Just my opinion, but I've played with numerous of the classical methods used to "doctor" copper/bronze. None of them work and most are easily detectable. Someday I'd like to write a pamphlet with good color photos showing what to look for in "doctored copper" - someday.

Sorry about the bad news. image

I thought you were a Morgan dollar guy.

Edit to say: Why do I think this thread is a set up?

Pushkin, not really bad news. This coin was sent to me because of the problems. I'll tell you this much - it's in a slab. I'll reveal the slab and the grade a little later on. Perhaps if you do a writeup on these, you can use this coin.

The good - The reverse is an attractive RB & the hit high on the C & E in CENT appears to be on the holder, not the coin.

The Bad and Ugly - I'm with Pushkin on this; that is not a natural carbon spot on the obverse. The color is unnatural and the large scratch on the Indian's cheek makes matters worse. The strike on the coin is not good (late date IHCs are usually well struck) and even if the coin was not played-with, it would be a slider at best.

Front feather tips are weak, which would not preclude an Unc. grade, but the third and fourth diamonds show wear. I would be surprised if this coin was slabbed by the majors.

No set up. I wanted some honest opinions from the copper guys without bias as to the holder or the grade.

The coin does look like it has circulation wear on the obverse. The spot would easily downgrade it to MS-60, if it were uncirculated. The reverse looks very nice, looks original red/brown.

    Net AU-50, at best.

That ugly spot makes it un-collectible, IMHO

That coin is very original in all aspects. Their has been no attempt to clean the carbon spot and I can even tell you a little history on this particular coin if you would like. mike image

I'm shocked and amazed at who slabbed the coin. Perhaps they let one slip past their usually astute grading team.

au-55 net 45 due to corrosion. the coin needs some tlc, ie this is a highly appropriate coin for the coin doctor.

i don't agree w/ the acg grade. doesn't necessarily bother me since i don't put any faith in ANY plastic grades.
