Does anybody use a Palm Pilot at coin shows?

VeepVeep Posts: 1,423 ✭✭✭✭
For a while, I've been thinking that a PDA might be a good way to carry an inventory of my collection, want list, price research, and other info while walking a show. Anybody use one for these purposes? If so, how's it working for you?

Thanks

I carry a 'hillbilly PDA'.....backpack with various references, entire CDN notebook, loupes, etc.....whole thing weighs about 25 pounds. I get a hell of a workout on a large bourse floor.

I make notes on my palm. It can be a problem, though, when I see a really nice coin and get all sweaty.

  • I don't use my PDA, but I think it would be a great idea. I keep my lists on the computer with excel and it is not difficult to export them directly to the PDA or convert the spreadsheet to a text file on the PDA.

Is there anyone who publishes coin date: prices, pop reports, mintages, etc in PDA format? That would be nice.

PPC (e750 Pocket PC) here and yes it does a good job. When I get bored I watch any one of a half dozen movies on it. The amount of data that can be held on a micro drive is amazing. 4G to be exact.

Need something designed and 3D printed?
  • Yes, of course.

Yes, I do carry my Ipaq 5150 to coin shows. I have my want list, my current collection, a few photos, downloaded prices from various places, and a whole bunch of other stuff.

    Veep,

I started using an iPAQ pocket PC about 8 months ago for exactly that purpose. I use it to keep my want list, client information and notes regarding what I see and I've had great luck with it.

I have a Toshiba Pocket PC that I use to keep a want list and upgrade list on. Plus, like someone else said, if I get bored, I can play games on it.

    I had this:
    Sony UX50
which was terrific, but I got sick of carrying a cell phone and a PDA, so I switched to this:
    Sony Ericsson P900
I love it. It does absolutely everything, and comes in a small package. I watch movies, listen to music, play games, use it as a remote for the TV, talk on it, keep spreadsheets on it (great for my coins), take pictures and movies, surf the internet, sync my calendar and e-mails from work into it. It even does streaming video over the internet. And of course it's a phone too. I just wish the camera was better so I could photograph coins with it. I hear they will be integrating TV and radio tuners into many phones later this year.

I have a palm and I allways make sure I take it along to all coinshows. I usually download the PCGS price guide down to EXCEL then import it to a program have on the palm. That way I have a general price guide on my palm!!

Ditto ... I keep my coin inventory in Excel on the desktop and sync it to the Palm ... excellent for coin show reference! I also use it to store notes/price guides on coins in which I am interested ...
  • Bothuwui - approx what does this unit run (with phone and camera). Also what are the monthly charges. I have been researching this intensely, and guess I am waiting for prices to come down. Thanks in advance.
  • I have a basic Palm model, and I love it for shows. My entire inventory is on it, so I can
look at what gaps I need to fill, etc. I haven't put price guides on it; that is a good idea.

  • Yup, all the time. I have my wants listed there with the estimated values for the grades I want the coins in for the collection. Very handy.

You date yourself calling it a Palm Pilot -- I think they stopped calling it a Pilot a lot of years ago.

At least that is what somebody said to me the last time I called it a Palm Pilot.

I have a Treo600 and it has an expansion slot for SD cards up to a gig now. There are a number of excellent third party software programs for tracking coins

  • Palm Pilot makes a model with a bar code scanner.

If you can get the codes from the different grading services that use bar coding, that might be a better way instead of having to input the data manually.

I use Sony's version of the Palm, a Clie, works great with a database program called Smartlist to Go. You can create a customized database for your coin collection. Also, I find printing my database list works easier than using the unit at shows or coin shops.
