1971-72 OPC Hockey

Does anyone collect this set? I am thinking of attacking it. Please let me know. And, of course, if you have any extra PSA 7s or 8s please let me know. Thanks.

  • Aren't the early 1970's opc kind of tough to find in high grade?

This is a good set to collect.
PSA 8 commons can be had from 20-40 dollars depending on who it is.
In the hockey world, this is not too bad.
Vintage hockey is tough to find, so your set building process may be very slow.
    I do have some 7 commons at 10each. himnit@safeplace.net

  • I am an avid collector of this set and presently I am number 2 on the registry. For a while there were only a few of us that were serious about this set but now more and more people are gettingthe 71 itch. It is a great set and the Higher numbers (Series 2) are a lot easier to find than the series 1 cards. If you chose to go after this et good luck and welcome to the hunt.

    Cheers,
    Darren

I would add prices have spiked a little bit on the 71 OPC/topps, but not too much. I collect the 71 topps but I have about two dozen 71 OPC cards as well. I love the design of these cards and it's one of my favorite sets.

Centering is difficult to measure on these issues along with the card size...the card sizes may vary slightly, so when buying raw or graded, if you get an undersized card, do not automatically assume it's trimmed.

Also, there is a lot of subjectivity in grading any OPC card for the wire cut. The fuzzy edges are sometimes overlooked (or taken into consideration) when assigning a grade and sometimes their not. The bottom line is that it is a difficult set to grade imo.

I would recommend that you take your time and buy already graded slabs for the stars and if your're going to buy raw commons, try to buy them in bulk. Good luck and enjoy your undertaking.

  • Thanks for all the input. I will be traveling to Toronto soon, and will peruse the card shops! Until then, I will look at ebay. Please email me at dsantoni@agio.com with your list and prices. Thanks.

I am from Toronto. When you do come to Toronto and find NM-MT raw71 OPC's in a card shop let me know. I have been looking for several years and have been unable to locate any at a sensible price. The only place I have located them wants more than it would cost to buy 8's on Ebay once you factor in the grading fee's.
The Sportscard and Memoribilia show is coming up on the first weekend in May, that would probably be your best shot at finding gradeable material at sensible prices.

When you are coming to Toronto, send me an email and I will provide you with a list of card shops worth checking out. Sorry to say, It will be a short list. Also, while you are here you should take the time to check out the Hockey Hall of Fame. Well worth the price of admission.

    Have a great day.

If the dealer you are talking about doesnt have a store on Trowers Road . Let me know which dealer you are talking about. Ive been known to pay aggressive prices for raw 71-72's

  • As a side note

looking at the Mastronet auction . I found it very interesting that the 3 toughest cards from the second series are all connected two side by side and one of top of the other two. I also thought that the Dionne rookie was the first card on the sheet and thats why it is much tougher than the Lafleur. i was wrong on that theory.

I really wished they would of pictured the 1st series sheet

Your reading me loud and clear.

Also, I read on another thread that you we're considering selling your home, probably for those 54' Topps Hockey packs. I think that is a great idea. Real Estate is overated anyway.image

You are correct . Im listing my house today image What i wouldnt give to open those 54-55 packs. Im hoping someone wins the lot and breaks it up to sell on ebay. Regardless of value i would have to open them , the collector in me would win out

Shouldn't be long before we see a flood of high grade ( NON PSA ) 71's on Ebay. Maybe even a couple of 10's if the laser is aligned just right.image

Seriously, it would be a shame if these sheets are cut. There can't be too many of these out there.
I hope they end up in the right hands.

    Rob..

Edited for unfairly singleing out just one grading company who alledgedly grades sheet cut cards. I am sure there are many who have these slide by their graders, knowingly or not.

You should have been a little more aggressive with those 71' lots last night. That would have been a nice start for you.
I think Randy's keen on filling out his " BOTR " set.

    Good luck with the set.

Actually Rob i thought about doing this and decided against it.

I only need a few cards from that lot and will offer the rest to Darren, Garry, and Browntoni.

The main purpose of that set will be to have cards that are better than my # 1 set but are lower in grade and to house some cards that have sentimental value that have been in my collection for years. In the next while im going to sell some 10's were i have a 9 that is equal or better and some 9's were my 8 is equal or better.

    Browntoni,

Good advice from Grillo. Cards can appear NM-MT, but end up getting 6's.
This happens more often with 1971-72 than any other year.

Good advice from Robstar. Buy them graded on ebay instead of shop searching.

Most Ontario stores have already been picked through. There are a few aggressive
71 collectors that have beat you to it.

There is probably more nice 71's still remaining in the states. They do end up on ebay every once and a while.

Randy.... I will be going after some of those packs. Will let you know if I win.

Very true I remember one of my first 71 submissions i got a bunch of 6's followed by an email from Rob asking what the heck happened image . My reply then was look at how many 6's DSL are getting on these and how many times you see DSL pull 6's

    Marc

Thanks for keeping me in mind on the 54-55 packs. I have no idea how high these will go

    Randy,

How high will these go ?

    A few comments.

Those 1965-66 topps hockey packs usually would go around
2,000.00 each. However, there are 33 lumped together.
Will someone spend 66,000.00 on the lot ? I think not...but...
    That remains to be seen.

This is extremely uncharted waters with the hockey wax community.

The only possible nightmare that exists is that there is a 4 sport wax
collector whose hockey wax collection is soft. We can have all these hockey
beauties going to someone who just wants to fill in some holes.

My prayer is that these get into the hands of someone who loves hockey cards,
    not just wax packs.

Hi Guys, I collect the regular issue 1971-72 Topps New York Rangers cards. I really like the set and have it in raw form. However, I loved that 1971 Rangers team as a kid so I collected that team set in PSA graded form. I was going to try to get the Rangers in OPC also but they are hard to find. If anyone has any of the regular 1971-72 Rangers for sale, please let me know. Neil
  • can anyone tell me why the Dionne is so hard to find in top grade? i think there are only two PSA 9's, as opposed to around 10 Lafleurs

I have been working on this set raw for a while in NM or better condition. These cards can be found pretty easily at the Canadian Expo in NM condition. Maybe not NMMT or MINT but certainly in NM and at good prices. Also, check with kyshasports on ebay (aaronman on these boards). He posted a while ago on the vintage sportscards trading board and he had plenty of PSA 7's from this set and at great prices.
  • Will someone please weight this set and send it to PSA.
