I haven't found anything this good in a while. It's almost a brown with a tint of red but the details and rims are pretty sharp. What do you think??

wow, that's pretty nice for a '65. Every one I ever see in change looks like crap.

Probably an SMS coin that made it in to circulation.

That was what I was leaning towards as well. Is there anyway to determine SMS from just a 1965?

The short answer is no. The long answer is that sometimes you can, sometimes you can't. The late strike SMS coins look just like early strike business strikes. An early strike SMS that is obviously prooflike is easy, but many don't look that way at all.

This one doesn't look prooflike to me at all but the rims are still high and sharp like a proof coin would be. But is is more brown than red, pictures are a little brighter than they should be.

It's been several years since I've found a '65 that approached this quality.

This makes me feel realy old. image

At first I thought "1965, what's the big deal?" Then I figured out that when I started collecting during Christmas week of 1959 a coin of that age would have been dated 1920 or 1921. That seemed pretty old to me back then.

Oh well. Like they say everything is relative.

  • Since our coins have gobstopper designs and there's never any issue rarities anymore, getting a forty year coin in that kind of condition is a real treat.

Maybe 6 months ago I got (3) old ('72 I think) BU Red Lincolns in change - I thought that was strange. Like an original roll was still at the bank and finally made it into circulation or something.

If you lived in my area you would find a lot of those.

Over the past month I have dumped at the stores, bank, and coinstar, more then 15,000 unc pennies Starting from 1959 - 1979.
