Anybody ever deal with Ellesmere?

Has anybody ever bought coins from Ellesmere Numismatics? Seems like they have a good reputation, but of the 2 coins I have purchased from them, although they were nice and technically accurate for the grade, neither one displayed the color described in the rather lengthy descriptions.......

I've purchased the following 1878-CC PCGS MS-63 PL Morgan from one of the "Jims" at Ellesmere, and found them to be very reliable and helpful on the telephone. They seem to be very client oriented, but slowly transitioning from catalog coin sales to computer coin sales with digital images.

  • Well, I bought a Morgan in 65 last year somtime, and it was descibed as having Rainbow toning and paid a fairly stiff premium. Got the coin (common date, I can't remember what) and there was this VERY light rainbow mottleing on the reverse. The coin I ordered last week had this glowing description and added rainbow highlights on 1/4 of the reverse. Got a middle of the road 65 with a piece of gunk at 7:00 on the obv. and no toning at all on the reverse.

I've only ordered a couple of coins from them, I sent them back, and I haven't bothered to try again. Their descriptions were more enthusiastic than I thought the coins deserved. I've also seen their offerings at large shows like Long Beach, where I have seen some nice pieces... but the prices scared me off.

But to be fair, I think they like coins with a different "look" than I do. I go nuts for in-your-face lustre and flashy surfaces. They seem to like untouched original surfaces. Unfortunately, I often find that "look" a bit drab and lifeless.

    To each our own, huh?
    When in doubt, don't.
  • Ya, like I said, technically the grade, but I can buy common date 65's all day long for 25 bucks less. I mean, com'on.

2 for 4 with their coins, but the 2 i kept were exceptional., and the 2 returned were not less than average. They're fine with returns, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy from them again.

Here is the reverse of the 1940 PCGS MS-68 walker I purchased from Ellesmere 4 years ago. It is a stunner. The reverse is the nicest of all reverses I have ever seen on any walker in my life. The red tint on the right side of the coin is not there, that is from the camera. The coin has an incredible golden tint that seems to have been corrupted by the internet pics I keep reloading and saving.

Good here but it has been awhile. Return them if not happy.

Oreville: That's certainly a beautiful reverse of the 1940 Walker -- kind of makes me want to also see the obverse.. image

Two coins were bought from them about a month ago. One was just fine with no problems except it appears to be a conserved coin but that is not their problem. The other coin was described as having 80 % Full Bands, a 18D Merc, and thats why it was purchased. The middle band was flat as a pancake so I called and asked to return it. Jim had no problem at all with the return and all aspects of the return were taken care of quickly.

Both Jims were met at Portland and seemed very friendly. If they have anything else of interest in the future I will not hesitate to get in touch with them. Also the Ladies that I talked to were very polite and helpful.

I've bought several MS67FB Mercs from them and they were as advertised. I'd buy from them again.

I bought a PCGS MS65 1935D Buffalo nickel and a PCGS MS66 1943S quarter from them. I was very pleased with both coins, especially the Buffalo which had very nice gold toning with a turqoise periphery and a full strike.

I've bought coins from them off and on for years. Always very satisfied until my most recent transaction a few months ago. The write up on the coins was not very accurate once received in hand. I didn't return them as the coins were not dogs...but not overly ansious to order again...Sorry Jim, I cant mislead my forum friends here.

I used to get a news letter from them 7-8 years ago and it was fun reading the coin descriptions but they were priced to high for me and looked more geared to the investment crowd the way they compared pop numbers and stuff in charts. mike

I think the name of their news letter was the "Winning Edge" ? mike

Most of the coins I have purchased from them are fairly graded, but more along the lines of average for the grade and not PQ. Jim Fehr is a good guy. Their newsletter is The Winning Edge, and it is an interesting read. It is free.

Never bought anything ( they don't really do IHC's) but enjoy the newsletter. Their analysis are pretty thorough.

I have dealt with Jim R at f.u.n. He was SO nice and helpful. I was just getting back into collecting and although they sell expensive items, he took the time to really educate me on several things when he really didn't have to take the time to do so. He really made me realize the difference in personality among dealers.

The winning edge has some hype, but much of their advice on purchasing is right on the money when it comes to general advice.

I would highly recommend them but don't just buy according to their written descriptions: they are great ad writers!!!!
