You're right ; I didn't take into consideration that I might get some of the Darkside Forum "plank owners" to participate, but we'll make an exception for you.image

    Meanwhile ...

While I'm getting tired of all this boring British coinage, any coin that old has to be interesting just for the history behind it and between it and today!

Please count me in your celebration.

  • Nice giveaway I'm in please. And congrates!

It's not Popeye, it's Asterix (and Obelix, you know?) . Popeye is the spinach guy. Asterix drinks the magic portion and beats the Romans. image

drjules-you're certainly welcome to participate-I've been noticing your posts. image

GCL-I appreciate your mild, interested tone- it shows that you understand the hints you've received to tone things down a little. Keep it up and you'll get those coins I was going to send you-they have your name on them but they're simply on hold until I see you achieve
what I think you're capable of.
You need to go back and read six months worth of World Coin posts; it's easy to do-just go backwards on the page count at the bottom And then you would see that almost everyone on this forum has frequent giveaways, and a lot that would beggar mine
So, before you observe, know the history so that your observation will be valid. OK, sorry I yelled.image
What sometimes makes me suspicious of you are comments like what the heck that cartoon figure was, is it popeye?
First, it looks nothing like popeye, I mean nothing like! So, how or why could you make that statement or draw that comparison?
Remember, a good numismatist needs an eye for detail-if you can't tell the difference between Asterix and Popeye, you'll buy a peace dollar instead of a Morgan one day, and then what?!
That figure is Asterix the Gaul, a little sumbich who, with his buddy Obelix made life miserable for anyone who messed with Gaulle
(Sigh, early France), including Julius Caesar. He's only about one of the worlds most famous cartoon figures and a real good read in the French but don't worry, it's been translated into more than 27 languages including English.

You are hereby required to present a thoughtful, adequately researched paper of a least 150 words on Scott's Gothic Crown.
By the way GCL, if you want to enter, I need you to complete this small assignment which I assigned you in another post. I expect to see it done by wednesday or Ajaan'l get you!

I completed the essay, researched about it and found alot of helpful information. I'll post my essay about this beautiful Gothic coin, for anyone who cares to read it and learn some history. Apologies to Scott, (Cachmen), and everyone else who I offended with my remark on the OT thread. Enjoy!

    -------------

In the year of 1847, a new portrait appeared on british crowns of Victoria. In addition to the young head "bun" crowns issued before this one, a very detailed and richly engraved design was made.
Only available in proof condition, these designs were known as the "Gothic" designs. This gothic design was only made 2 years. The design is a Victorian crown type with a large bust of the queen, wearing a crown with a fancy embroidered dress. The other sides design is cruciform shields, with roses, thistles, and shamrocks in the tressured angels. The inscripptions on both sides are in Gothic script, and are very strange in being in lower case, (except for the captalized V of victoria). The two years it was issued was 1847 and 1853. They are very rare coins that should be appreciated as true masterpiece of art.
The engravers initials W.W for William Wyon, are incuse on the gap below the shoulder. On the reverse cruciform shields bearing three lions passant for England, lion rampant for Scotland, and a harp for Ireland. In the angle are roses, a shamrock and a thristle. In the center, the Order of the Garter, bearing the inscription: "HONI SOIT QUI MAY Y PENSE." All is contained within a circular panel. The reverse was also made by William Wyon, (His initials appear incuse on the circle at either side of the topmost crown). The reverse legend is also in lower case gothic style script:"tueatur unita deus anno dom mdccxlvii(The date)"
The edge is inscribed in raised lower case gothic style lettering, with roses and crown separators: (crown) decus (rose) et (rose) tutamen (crown) anno (rose) regni (rose) undecimo.
The average price of this coin date 1847 in AU, is £900 or $1,500 dollars. Making the price cachemen has for his coin quite the deal.
