Why not Peace Dollars?

Peace Dollars aren't the most popular series. Is the strike issue what's deterring collectors from focusing on them? It would most likely be a challenge (and expensive) to assemble a set of nice, strongly struck Peace Dollars. What a sight it would be, though!

I`m not sure either and I think strike is an issue. In my opinion, Peace Dollars are in their glory in the MS64 and higher grades with good even frost and strike. The downside of that is the expense of the later, better dates as most collectors can`t or won`t dish out that kind of money for one.

Still, most look EF to UNC.

DOH!!!image Touche.image I have a pair of AU58s that look good too. Judging by them, a nice AU58 can be done in an affordable price. Being picky and patient on strike and general " look ".
  • I love 'em. I'm trying to put a nice frosty set together but the prices just get higher especially for the '28. A 34 S in extra fine would be a nice. The next grade up will months to get the funds to afford one. It's been difficult to obtain a nice looking 34 S in EF. A challenge indeed.

PDs are a nice set and a little cheaper than Morgans.

They are one of my favorite series. When I have a complete set, it goes out faster than it came in! The Peace dollars don't receive alot of publicity, but they are a popular coin. Numismatic News printed an excellent story on them in the January 4, 2000 issue. It was by R.W. Julian and has the profile of Teresa Cafarelli who was de Francisci's wife and model for the coin. She was a beautiful woman! I clipped the article and put it in my Breen's Encyclopedia, unfortunately I can't find the second page of the article (Page 26).

It's a great set for beginners and advanced collectors. A beginner can put together a
complete set for not-$$$$$. Then, the set can be brought along with selective upgrades.
I started with a nice AU/BU set which I completed 3 months ago. Now I'm going back and
upgrading (starting with the common dates). You'd be surprised how hard it is to find
a nice '22 in MS-65. Lot's and lots in 62-64. But 65 is hard and 66 is really hard. I recently
stumbled onto a sure 65 maybe 66 1925. When they get that good they are a very
    pretty coin.

  • You ought to be able to buy a complete slabbed set of ACG's for $100, maybe $150.........probably all be MS67's too. Oh I am speaking of their actual worth, not retail price people ask. Ok, I am kidding.........or am I???? LOL

I'm working on a set now. So far I have six coins in a Dansco album. All of them are at least MS 63.

    We ARE watching you.

I agree one man's 66 is another man 58.. but I was referring to PCGS/NGC numbers.

I have hard time selling most Peace Dollars except for 1921s and 1928-Ps. I don't understand it, but that's the way it is. image

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
