"FIVE D" = FIVE DOLLARS. I believe this is a real coin!
It's sort of funky looking though!

src... I would love to have the opportunity to "bite on it".

It looks real to me. 1843-D Half Eagle. Looks like it was a jewelry piece. About 98,000 mintage makes it one of the most common of Dahlonega Half Eagles but if it is real, even as ex-jewelry someone got a nice deal.
For what it is worth. This looks fake. Not real. Counterfeit.

ps It is a contemporary counterfeit, and a d-mint to boot. There are a lot of people who collect counterfeit coinage (comtemporary) with a passion. And then there are those who collect modern counterfeits unknowingly.
After looking closely at the pics in the Redbook,I believ it's real deal.If it is,even in that condition (VF) IMHO.The value (Redbook) is $650.If that is the real deal, someone got a steal.Apparently there were others that thought the same thing.
It looks real to me also but in pretty sad shape- I have sold other rare $5 coins in condition that rivals this one for under $200. Kind of a neat find but no real money to be made. mike
Fake. Neck area is too thick, truncation of the bust is wrong, numeral style is wrong, and on the back the end of the olive branch stem is too far right wih respect to the D below it.
