An unopened mint shipping box of 10 1965 SMS sets or 10 1964 proof sets. Why? Because they're like a box of chocolates.

A nice XF or so 1909-S lincoln, or a decent '21 P or D dime. Why - I think a good coin to have for the money.
  • For $150 I could probably get a nice Fine-- maybe even pushing Very Fine -- silver 1536-72 Reale of Mexico.
They're attractive, decent-sized silver coins AND the first struck in the New World!

I'd try to locate a nice AU indian quarter eagle because they look awesome- and it's hard to argue with an attractive gold coin...

A PCGS graded 20 cent piece, as good grade as the $150 gets me--because a "hoard of these " will never be discovered, it will never be common, has a great history, most Americans don't even know it exists, and it will probably never go down in price.image

It depends what you like, because there are MANY options.

Maybe a Seated Half Dollar in EF, or 2c Sheild in MS63, or an AU large cent.

A $2.50 Indian in AU is also a great choice.

I would go for the highest grade, oldest coin you could find

  • Just bought a nice 1853 3-cent silver - Anacs MS 61 - lightly toned in gold and red/orange. Paid $125 including shipping and insurance. The coin is well-struck and has good eye appeal. While not exceedingly rare, it has alot to offer (pre-Civil War US coin; obsolete type; obsolete denomination, a pleasure to look at). To answer your question: I would look for attractive 19th century US coins in nice AU or affordable MS grades that have been certified by PCGS, NGC or ANACS. These coins are generally scarcer than modern coins and they have a bit of history behind them.

i love morgan, barber and bust coinage, but it was not a question of what i would get, more a poll of what others would buy. No MS70 Kennedy halves yet???? Or do all the modern collectors try to get the cherries out of bank bags and rolls..............and submit yourself and make huge $$$

  • I would probably buy a seated dime - best one I can get for the money. Why - I am trying (not terribly hard) to put together a mini-type set of dimes.
  • I'm not sure what that Cameo Morgan cost SeattleSlammer on this thread but it may qualify.

edited to add why: I like that because I like the cameo look and it is a big silver dollar image

tsacch... to be honest... right now I'd buy some nice junk silver... say ex fine morgans and peace dollars, and ride the wave up for silver prices. if you wanted numismatic material, buy pcgs ms64 morgans -- not ms65 morgans since they already have a numismatic premium attached. good luck. cheers, alan mendelson

I would buy an original skin commemorative in 64-65 with great eye appeal. So many to choose from and with all the dogs holdered by the TPG (yes, even PCGS and NGC) the prices are really depressed compared to other series.

I would buy a nice British coin from the late 1700s or early 1800s if it were for my collection. If I was looking to make money I'd go after a nice original type coin.

Me too, I saw one the other day on eBay.

It went for $295, nearly double the numismatic value.

Nice high end XF bust half. Where else cn you get nice 175 year old coin for under $150? Plus edge lettering is super cool.

I'd buy anything with a CC mint mark.

Why? they don't last long in stock.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

    Got quoins?
  • With a budget of $150, I would purchase a true VF (technical grade, not market grade) 1914-D Buffalo nickel that has original surfaces. The date is one of the keys to the series, is not readily available, is a classic American coin, and is unappreciated in true VF condition.

Be aware that many of the 1914-D ebay coins have been cleaned and are not properly graded. I would also recommend looking carefully at third party coins as many of this date in holders in VF and XF condition have been lightly cleaned. PCGS, NGC and ANACS typically get the grading correct.

I agree with Alan. But to stay close to the $150 I would buy a killer looking MS65 Common Date Morgan. Morgans in 65 will get a slingshot effect as silver/gold escalate.

I just bought a VG+ (most people would probably call it a F) 1914-D Lincoln Cent. I got it at a show for $140, dealer had it marked $150. Prefect color to fit in with the rest of my circulated Lincoln Cent. So, I would try and get a key or semi-key date for $150.
