does the liberty seated design show itself off better on the larger denomination coin?

I for one think so. When I look at a dime, something seems out of whack. Either the shape proportion is off(I think the head is too big for the body, the drapery detail is not what it is on the larger coins or the design takes up too much of the coin's obverse, leaving to little field for eye-relief. Has anyone else noticed this?

I'll agree that some dimes can be less pleasing that other coins.

Recently I purchased an 1853 with arrows dime in MS-64 for my type set. The coin is "all there" preservation wise, but the artwork is pretty bad. For whatever reason Ms. Liberty looks less graceful and most "boxy" than she does on any other seated denomination, including the half dimes. The reverse is also pretty stark with the thin wreath and lots of words.

Generally the "No Draprary" coins look the best among the seated desgins. The work by Roberty Ball Hughes that followed that type is definitely inferior.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Yes, dimes and halfdimes (while I love them just the same) seem to have a nose about the size of Baltimore.

Dollars and Half dollars, miss Liberty looks very nice.
  • In my opinion, the problem isn't with the size of the coin, it's with the Hughes redesign of the coinage in 1840. Any denomination of Gobrecht's coinage 1836-1839 is well proportioned and beautiful. The half dollar is the only denomination that retained Gobrecht's original design after 1840.

Yes. As stated above the nose is huge on small denominations. Dollars and halves are quite pretty.
