<< <i> Knowingly and willingly to collectors while representing them as original - absolutely.

    "Knowingly"?

Shouldn't any member that does retail be required to be an expert in recognizing doctored coins? >>

You know and I know that they're good enough to get a lot past many of the experts. Do we need to drag up the Gobrecht thread you started again?

No doubt. But if we can't rely on the good dealers to protect their clients, what do we gain by excluding the bad dealers?

I will endorse you for free! As a matter of fact, I pay to endorse you, in the form of grading fees. (I know it's an old post, but it still holds true!)

You know.. I have been thinking.. if all it takes for PCGS or NGC to get the "approval" of the PNG or the ANA is money, then what's that really worth to me?

If the ANA made PCGS the official grading service of the ANA because they felt they were the most honorable service out there then yeah, I could see that meaning something. Or am I nuts again?

True, although the increased credibility of the organization does nothing in itself to help collectors.

PNG would not have taken the money from just anyone. That should mean something to you, assuming you are looking for someone to protect you.

Sorry. I thought that "we" in your question referred to the PNG, not to collectors.

I just paid a visit to the PNG website and was inspired to write a new slogan for the organization.

The PNG: Where a member's financial worth is more important than his criminal background.
  • <<I bumped it because I was quite taken aback today by the clever phrasing in the PNG's press release regarding the reward fund. It got me wondering [again] how NGC managed to have the exact same format as PCGS's bid for the PNG's endorsement and how they ended up pretty much exactly $20k higher on the cash and $20k higher on the submissions. On a blind bid with no preset format.

    Might have been coincidence.>>

Are we getting off topic? I understand how doctoring of coins is a hot topic around here, but I just visited PNG's website for the first time and read their press release. I got the distinct impression from reading that release PGN started the reward fund to catch the robbers. I find it odd that no mention of Jon or Laura was in that press release.

Let’s face it there is a great deal of money involved the TPG of coins; what I have gathered from this thread is there is also a great deal of politics involved in the TPG of coins. If PNG is truly interested in protecting and educating the collector why endorse only one TPG?

If their interests lay elsewhere, and those interests are politically (i.e. financially) motivated then maybe the collector base needs to rethink support for this organization. As a FNG I have no idea and I just learned of this organization, but I can tell you this:

    1) I like PCGS and I am a confirmed kool-aid drinker.
    2) I am very skeptical of coincidences.
    3) I did not like my first excursion into PNG land.

I think more discussion on the political aspirations of this group is needed to enlighten the new people around here; not another hijacked thread about coin doctors. JMHO

    Andy,

I agree that they wouldn't have taken sponsorship from ACG or SGS or something and that they along with the ANA are a positive force in our hobby, but still...

Perhaps Pfizer, Novartis, Johnson & Johnson and maybe a couple other major pharmas could all send send sealed bids to Major League Baseball for the exclusive right to have a nice hologram sticker on all of their retail products stating "Official Supplier of Performance Enhancing Drugs to MLB"?
