Having lived in Galway I can tell you the stuff they sell here belongs in the toilet. This inported Guiness taste nothing like the stout in Ireland. Biggest sellers there are Guiness and Harp Lager. Better have your head screwed on if you spend a night pub crawing drinking either one. As a wise old man told me during my 3 years in England in the USAF, " You don't buy beer, only rent it".

    Mr. Eureka:

Congrats on a fine performance in the World Series of Grading.

Try Yuengling next time. It is an underrated Pennsylvania beer that has somewhat of a limited distribution. It is allegedly the oldest brewery in the US. They brew a porter and black & tan

Ahhh ... when I was in college 25 years ago, there was an obscure Pennsylvania brew called Fox Deluxe. A case for $4.99 ... tasted like you know what, but the alcohol content was jacked. Pretty soon, you did not notice what it cost and what it tasted like. Good for those drinking for effect ... image These days, I like to jump around and sample the finer beers ... here's a second that Killian's is a good choice.

Yuengling Brewing Co is supposed to be the oldest in the US, at least according to them. That's what it says on the billboards around here.

Speaking of billboards and Guinness (my favorite), when I was in Ireland a few years ago, I recall seeing billboards that said "Guinness is good for you." GAT, I agree with you - the Guinness in Ireland is better than what we get here.

Barry, I don't know about Yuengling being the oldest, but it is very good beer for the price, especially when you compare it to American beer such as Bud, Coors, etc. Fortunately they sell it here, but I don't think any further south.

Yes, Yuengling is pretty good. I don't like Bud or Coors at all. I've even tried them both factory fresh at brewery tours, and didn't take more than one sip. Ok, maybe two image

  • Beer is something to drink while golfing, or plowing and sowing the fields,... PERIOD

For special occasions like St. Paddy's day, wakes, birthdays, summer or winter solestice, Yule, a job promotion, a wedding, a job demotion, a new birth in the family, a new birth in someone else's family, someone else's job promotion, anyone's job demotion, a new set of tires on me wife's car, a tax refund, a state of the union address, or anything else that constitutes a good reason, you drink Irish whiskey!

'Twas on St. Patrick's day in 1983 when I lived in Ghana that a neighbor brought in some Guiness to add to the local palm wine. Another Peace Corps volunteer told me that the lowly Ghanaian 1 cedi coins (7 sided) worked in British vending machines as a 50 pence coin. The next year I made several telephone calls from Heathrow airport with worthless Ghanaian cedis.

Should I thank Guiness for establishing a brewery in Ghana, or was this "pot o' gold" discovery merely coin-cidental?

BTW, I celebrated tonight with a 22 oz. Club Beer which is finally available on the South Side of Chicago.
