I can think of two, but feel free to add to the list.

1. Auction tags and flip inserts. You won't find these for sale anywhere unless you ask, but many coin collectors and dealers have their own private stash. If they see that you're seiously building a collection, you can probably get them to part with some for virtually nothing. (I don't know if I've seen any US auction tags older than the 30's or 40's. Has anyone?)

2. Digital images. If you think that this is child's play, try putting together a complete set of US coins by die variety and die state.

  • Auction catalogs almost qualify, but there is a small associated cost. At the last EAC convention, I purchased about 30 old auction catalogs (many with PR) for about $1 to $3 each.

All of my current auction catalogs are free, since I am on all of the mailing lists. I was referring to older auction catalogs (70's and 80's). It is fun to look back and see what coins were being bought and sold and for how much.

Aside from the usual suspects, (Bowers & Ruddy, old Paramount, Jim Kelly, Ect.) I have a few holders from Guttag Bros, Chapman Bros, Henry Chapman, and of course B. Max Mehl. This really is a challenge to do. Finding memorablia from all the major, and minor, coin dealers is fun and fasinating.

Zero??? It cost me $100 for two entry fees! (I also played in the first round but I was half a point shy of securing a seat in the finals.)

Actually, it only cost me $80 because I sold one of my two World Series Souvenir T-Shirts for $20. image
