My friends, I am at a loss

Well, I am at a loss I have no direction in my collecting right now. I have finished my Proof Ike registry set and pretty much finished the business strikes. I am closing in on finishing the Silver eagle set. My wife would like to see me collect slivers like Kookaburas, Pandas and the like. Irish coinage no problem. I was thinking about Canadian coinage and I can't seem to find another country's coinage interesting to me. I don't know I guess I will keep looking until something just hits me and I can't live without itimage

Darkside gold. Much of it can be bought at close to spot.

    We ARE watching you.

Do a British monarch type set, including colonial issues. George V is cool.
  • The set of coins that I enjoy collecting the most is Viking Ships. I would recommend that you find some topic that interests you, and then go for it. When I started these, I was told I might find 30 to 40 pieces. I now have over 150 different ones. I chose Viking ships because when I lived in Norway and Denmark, they seemed to fascinate me. I have several collections I am working on, but the Viking Ships are by far my favorite.

There are hundreds of specialized collections you could choose, just find something that you already have an interest in. I finished my Ikes several years ago, then got all of the verities, did a toned set, then collected the doubled dies. The Viking ships have been much more fun.

    Good Luck,

    Bob
I like Ikes!! But I especially like Viking Ships, Swedish Plate Money, and all coins Scandinavian.

  • I agree with JohnZ. Darkside gold is a great collection. It is usually some of the more culturally important coinage and can certainly be had at a reasonable price, especially compared to liteside gold or silver.
I've been picking up some pieces over the last year and am very happy with them.

That's a neat collecting concept. Of the 150, how many are NCLT types?

Non Circulating Legal Tender. I was wondering how many of your 150 Viking ship types were actually coins minted for circulation and how many are commemorative in nature.
  • I would have to look and count, but my guess would be as follows:
Circulating Legal tender - 30 plus 5 pieces of currency
    Non Circulating Comm. - 50
    Medals - 30
    Tokens - 40

No need to look it up. I just wanted a general idea of how many were on actual circulating coins. Very neat collection, thanks.
  • How about a one coin from every century collection-- going back to
5th Century B.C (or even 6th Century BC if you can track one of those EARLY early bean-like greek coins).

Go for the Irish coins. They are fantastic.

Go to a coin show and visit the Worlds and Ancients section. Ask to see world silver crowns (you seem to like large silver coins) , and you'll be surprised at their variety and price range. Buy a Standard Catalogue of World Coins (by Ch. Krause & C.Mischler) . It will only set you back around $50, but it will prove an invaluable help to your decision.

It seems that until now you've concentrated on modern issues. How about checking out something older? Many excellent suggestions have been given, such as British coins (including and especially all colonial issues), Darkside gold (including medieval ducats and equivalents, which can often be had for not much premium over melt), Talers (and especially Cacheman's favorites--city views), and perhaps old Siberian dengas. There's so much out there. Have you seen anything on the boards here that might interest you? Have you been to coin shows to see and hold the coins we're talking about?

    Good luck and Happy Collecting!!!
