Here's an interesting little curiousity. A "tar" dollar. Trade dollars were occasionally smuggled out of Japan in junks transporting tar. The coins were dumped into the tar barrels and cleaned up later. One still finds some with traces of the tar left on them.
The classics are always fun. I purchased this coin back in the 1980s. At the time there was better example of this coin in the same auction, but I just could not afford it. Today given the increases in prices, I'd have a hard time swinging the purchase price of this piece for my own collection although the business could easily afford it.
The point is even you can't afford the best coins available today, if you buy items that are scarce and nice for the grade, years from now you will own some coins that will be remarkable in their own right.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
Here are 4 of my favorites, CN, Cu-Al, Bronze and Al.
"My friends who see my collection sometimes ask what something costs. I tell them and they are in awe at my stupidity." (Baccaruda, 12/03).I find it hard to believe that he (Trump) rushed to some hotel to meet girls of loose morals, although ours are undoubtedly the best in the world. (Putin 1/17) Gone but not forgotten. IGWT, Speedy, Bear, BigE, HokieFore, John Burns, Russ, TahoeDale, Dahlonega, Astrorat, Stewart Blay, Oldhoopster, Broadstruck, Ricko, Big Moose.
coinlieutenant - I love those old golds! Especially those 1805 Eagles and Half Eagles as those are my favorite US coin designs. I wish I could afford one of those babes.
coinlieutenant - Thanks, I`ve thought about having sent off. But for now, it`s in an El Cheapo plastic circular snap case until I get a Capital Holder for it. So I intend to keep it raw for a good while. I bought it as a MS62 and looks correctly graded ( which is as it should as I bought it from Dr Michael Feys` site about a month ago ).
Nice patterns. You know, I'll never understand why some of the most incredible patterns didn't result in production for circulation. The art work is just so wonderful. I know there's logistics involved with striking them but I'm sure many could have been made for circulation. It would sure be nice if they used some of that art work today.
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
Mine was in an ANACS 64FH holder & I traded it for the same date (17-D Type1) in a PCGS 65FH holder that is hands down a 66FH. It's not toned but just as stunningly beautiful.

I would have guessed quarter too, hard to tell when they didn't put it on the coin and there is nothing to compare to size-wise.

MS70: Upgrade to what? That's one nice looking coin. Nice color especially. Here's one of mine:
A key date with nice color. Hard to find un-messed with in AU. The SLQ series is very over-dipped IMHO.
WOW! That's a sweet coin with a sweet date!
