Bobby Orr Mania

Not that there was ever a time when Bobby Orr wasnt popular but it sure seems like Bobby Orr mania has taken full flight . In the past week or so we had a 1971 OPC # 245 PSA 9 1 of 2 sell for $2000. then another card from 69-70 OPC high series PSA 10 1/1(there are a ton of 9's of this card) sell for $2500. Over and above these 2 cards prices have been much stronger for all Orr cards

Do you think this is registry driven with guys building Orr collections but havent registered them yet

Keep in mind that the Bruins are finally back! This brings back the warm feelings for Bruin collectibles and things like PSA Bobby Orr! Great time to be selling Bruin stuff here over the coming weeks; just wish I had some to sell :-)

i would bet it has just as much to do with the '69 and '71 sets being popular. of course, it is Bobby Orr and his registry sets are actively pursued. hopefully PSA will add some more player sets such as Dryden, Howe and Hull. i'm sitting on a potential goldmine of PSA 9 low pops of those guys

    Good question doncherry.

I sold the 71 opc double trophy for 2,000.00 and the
    69 All Star psa 10 for 2,500.00
I sold a nice PSA 8 rookie for 5,450.00 last week too.
I thought that was a steal for the buyer too.

Bobby has always sold well on ebay. However, the prices
on his rare cards are somewhat disrespectful when
compared to Mantle. What would a fourth year Mickey Mantle PSA 10 sell for ? Over 10 grand ?

Forget Mantle, how about a seventh year Yastremski
PSA 9 1/2 selling for 2,300.00 last month.
Then a fifth year PSA 9 1/2 (probably the nicest Orr card layout on
the planet) sells for 2,000.00 and people are shocked ?

I think some hockey card buyers live back in the 80's
when it comes to buying and selling RARE Orr cards.

I've also seen on these boards how 1975 topps baseball collectors
are "shocked" at some of the prices people are paying for
PSA 9 Yount and Brett rookies. The people who have bought in the
past have to understand that prices continue to go up as more
collectors enter the PSA world. These older collectors think these new collectors are foolish
    for paying such high prices.

I don't think this is a set registry thing because the two guys who bought the
71 double trophy and Orr AS PSA 10 do not participate on the registry.

So in my opinion, those who still want to spend pennies
on quality Bobby Orr cards may have a hard time finishing collections.
It's about time Bobby is getting the respect he deserves in
    the hobby.

The recent prices being paid makes Wallinga's purchase from Scerb last April an absolute steal

I've been building an Orr master set for 4 months now and I am about 65% at 7.81 , being primarily a baseball collector, i have been surprised at how low I have paid for some of the items that i have bid on. It seems that the distinction is not really made between the short prints and the easier ones on ebay. then there are some cards that I have never had a chance on now that I think about it.

If you have ever had the chance at meeting Bobby Orr, you will understand why his cards are always in demand. He is a classy guy, and a million times more personable than the current crop of professional athletes that exist today. And another reason to ignore the current junk that is produced, in the sports hobby, and concentrate on the vintage years.
The first person in the PSA universe to complete the 1969 OPC
Hockey set! Always looking to buy, trade or upgrade 1966 Topps to 1969 OPC.

You can never have enough Bobby Orr cards. If anyone has 68 OPC in a 7 or higher I am interested. OPC orr cards from 68-72 are some of the toughest cards to find from any star player in any sport.

    Greg,

As we both know, PSA graded the card a 9.
They properly slabbed it MINT 9, not 8.

As we both also know, many of the wax pack
Dryden's, LaFluers, and Orr's from that year
    have the slant cut.

Some of my nicest parkhurst cards have the
slant "cement mixer" cut on them.
Many of us in the hobby not only accept this,
we love it, because it is the way the cards were printed.

I wish you could have seen this Orr card in person,
you would understand why it had such a high reserve.

    Greg,

If you know where these cards exist with MINT 9
corners, 55/45 centering, opc butterknife wax cut, and no slant, get them
graded, you'll make lots of money. Most of these
double trophy cards are 70/30 at best.

yep marc you had it right. mark wallinga was even better, he predicted where the bid would be before the snipe. don't get me wrong , I am happy with the hammer price , but still sad to see the card go . now I need to find another one but this will help in my quest for a rookie.

Bobby Orr was voted the most complete player in history of the sport. A defenseman winning scoring titles is unheard of. Imagine Jordan winning a rebound AND scoring title in the same season and that's how dominant he was. He will always be the most collected hockey player. Just watch him on Youtube and you'll see why there is a Orr Obsession. Remember, he did it all on bad knees and playing only 9 full seasons.

As of the end of the 2010–11 season:
First and only defenceman to score nine hat tricks
First defenceman to score 30 goals (1969–70) and 40 goals in a season (1974–75)in a season.
First player to record 100 assists in a season (1970–71)
Only defenceman to lead the league in scoring (1969–70, 1974–75)
Only player ever to win the Norris Trophy, Art Ross Trophy, Hart Trophy, and Conn Smythe Trophy in one season (1969–70)
Second all-time in career plus-minus rating (+597) (retired as the overall leader)
Fourth in league history in career point-per-game average, all-time, (1.393) (highest among defensemen)
Fifty-ninth overall in league history in career assists and 90th in career points

Sorry but to compare mantle to Orr is not all that credible.
It needs to be Orr Vs, Ruth
Mantle was great. popular but simply not the best all time.

I have always said and always will say Orr was simply the best all time.

His cards are worth every penny.

I have been noticing cards of Beliveau going strong

Mr. Howe certainly has an equal claim to being #1 as Orr or Gretzky. Was a superb player with no weaknesses in his game and he played forever!!!
