Baltimore Show Report thread

Here's my insignificant "take" on the show...

We arrived just a tad before 10 and waited for the doors to open. There didn't seem like many people there upon opening but within 2 hours the place was nuts to butts and almost like the annoying Cleveland show that seemingly takes place in a closet.

I went to Rick Snow's/Bret Palser's table and picked up a cool monitor CWT for 140.00 and looked at a bunch more without buying any for fear of blowing all of my cash by 10:15.

I submitted my quarterly freebie at PCGS and finally met Carol Jello. My son scored a sample slab there and at NGC.

I FINALLY got to meet TomB!!!! It was an honor/priviledge to finally meet him and see some of his pieces in hand. It wasn't long after that I got to meet Idahogal. Her eyes are even more mesmerizing in person.

My son and I walked the floor for a while. I think it was 11 am when he finally said "Dad, can we leave?" LOL!! (we didn't leave til 4:30). Shortly after this we were walking down around table #150 and I noticed the dealer there had his finger BURIED in his nose for a solid 30 seconds. He wasn't trying to hide it either. I was just glad that I didn't see him eat whatever he found whenever he found it.

We met up with Ken and family, Merz, Tootawl, Idahogal, Dollars and Mrs.Dollars, Sadysta and we went across the street for lunch. I told my boy we "found the hippie" and Dollars was gracious and gave my son a PCGS DCAM Ike buck at lunch for finding the hippie! Thanks again Dollars!

We then went back to the show and walked around and bumped into some more members. I saw Tonekiller who almost converted me into buying a gorgeous BLUE proof jefferson nickel. I came close! I saw GSAguy "around" and also Wayneherndon and RKfish.

All in all the show was packed! There were people everywhere but I didn't see a lot of cash changing hands between the public and dealers. I did see one guy ask a price on something at DLRC and literally set the slab down and yelled something to the effect of "Your Joking" at the guy and walked off. He then walked back and made another comment. The guy at the table wasn't even phased by this.

My son got the new nickel and the newest state quarter. I offered to buy him an NGC PL or DMPL that some lady had several of at table 750? for around 50.00 each and he decided he didn't want one.

I went back to find Bret Palser to spend some more dough on CWT's and he and his tokens were gone.

We left shortly after that. It was good to see that many of the dealers appeared to stay this time through most of Saturday!

If I think of anything else I'll edit/add. If I forgot anyone I apologize!

Thanks for the report. Wow.....a full thirty seconds, thats some serious picking.

    Any pics of your CWT?
  • Goose3, great thread. Thanks for the update. I was supposed to be at the show, but things are just too busy right now. The story about the whack-job at the DLRC table is kind of scary. I have seen the same thing happen a couple of times, unfortunately.

I did not arrive at the show today until 1:30 and I was shocked because of the crowd. The turn out today was the best I think I have ever seen with the possibble exception of Long Beach shows 20-25 years ago. From my discussions with dealers, it seemed to be a success.

Ed announced this evening that the show set an attendance record (8,000 guests). At one point today the hall was busting at the seems from all the people.

Yes, they set a record for number of kids too. Also set a record for donations to the Children's Hospital, the convention charity.

I have to concur with what the others have said.I saw quite a few transactions.People weren't just looking.
I did take the grading challenge and sadysta took it right behind me.We compared thoughts afterwards. His knowledge of different types of coins seemed to give him better insight. We'll have to wait and see. There were only (2) Lincolns in the (40) coins.image Good or bad I'll post my results as soon as I receive them.image

nice report - but you gotta relay more details on this nose picker - why 30 sec is way too long. Who was it? Need to know. Does he submit to any grading services. Do his coins come back BB'd? AT'd? image It is all beginning to make sense now to meimage

  • Goose, was good to meet you. Your son is a fine young man.

I had a great time today. Finally ran into a short dealer. And I mean 'tude not height. I look at a coin that was out of my price range. And went I didn't buy he gave me a speech about how far under sheet he was on the coin. so I had to tell him the coin was out of my price range and that I did not have a problem with his price. Sorry I looked.

But otherwise, I did have a great time. WH showed me some of the coins he had picked up. MAN OH MAN. Just flat out wonderful coins. Some day I will have the money to pick up a few like he showed me.

    Thanks for the nickel Ken.

Thanks for the great company at lunch to all

Cliff, had a great time at dinner. We will go down to your neck of the woods and hit the place you were telling us about.

  • The organizer of the Baltimore show also does a Collectibles show here in Lakeland bi-annually, first one was 2 weeks back. They also had a fistfull of money there for the little kids, seemed to be a big hit...
