holy crap, sorry for all the logo's. I didn't realize that if you hit the wheel on your mouse it will just keep inserting the logos.
shagrotn77 ,still have the ozzie. most likely end up right next to my psa 9 opc brett rookie that I just bought for my 70's rookies collection
oh! I guess I didn't finish my story in the last thread. I sent out a submission the day I opened the pack with the ozzie. I think it is good karma to send a submission and open a pack, my results seem to be better that way
When I was opening 1990 OPC Premier hockey, if you had access to an uncut sheet, you could tell which cards would be appearing in which packs. The cards would be in reverse order (bottom first) from top left to right. Technically, one could search for the Jagr & Fedorov, and leave many untouched but I opened them all at the time.
Same for the 1990 UD French, the supposedly short print hockey High series, the high numbers would all appear in sequence, within the packs.
The first person in the PSA universe to complete the 1969 OPC Hockey set! Always looking to buy, trade or upgrade 1966 Topps to 1969 OPC.
Walked into a North Little Rock baseball card shop about 4 years ago after seeing a 1969 rack pack auctioned on e-Bay from the store. The person beyond the counter expained that an individual had rack packs from 1968-1971 stored in an attic from a store that closed down in southern Missouri. They also had a box of unopened 1973 Topps cards. Evidently, "hundreds" of these packs were opened or sold already so I was late to the party so to speak. In addition, they already had an understanding of what the market was bearing for the packs on e-Bay. I saw about 6 1968 rack packs, 4 1969 rack packs, several 1970 and 1971 rack packs that were still left. I seem to recall that the 1970 and 1971 racks had more cards than the 1968 and 1969 racks which were 36/pack. Nevertheless, all the cards looked pristine. I managed to buy all 4 rack packs (2 each of series One and series Two) for $1000 with one rack pack having 2 Leo Durochers showing. Eventually, I plan on having the packs certified and if that PSA 9 Lou Brock never emerges I might be tempted to open one of them someday!
I always remember your small hoard of '69 racks. Please let us know the results if you ever open any of them. I opened a 1969 cello a while back but didn't get a major star. I managed a few 8s including Norm Cash though.
I"ll say my best was buying an unopened 1960 wax on ebay and finding a YAZ Rookie on it in terrific shape though with print spots typical of the year. Sold it for a pretty penny and I believe the buyer submitted it and got a PSA 8
I'd also mention '67 Duke Sims that came from a wax pack/ebay but y'all are tired of hearing about that one.
Worst might be a 50's red pack where I wound up making more selling the wrapper than the cards themselves.
ebay:1967topps 1967and 1973 Topps baseball wantlists (any condition) welcome. Once had the #14 ATF 1967 set. Yet another collector like skylaneflyer, gimel1 who made it to the completion of 1967 only to need the money more than the company of 609 close friends. Looking for oddball Norm Cash and Cleon Jones stuff, and 1956 team cards
Back in '96 my wife bought me a box of Signature Series for Christmas. In the 12 packs, the worst guys I got were a Bartolo Colon and a Bobby Abreu. I also got Significant Signatures of Brett, Frank Robinson, and Brock, and then the last card in the box was a Millenium Ripken.
in my experiance with unopened i've always had the best luck (grading wise) with wax, the cards usually seem to be centered better. is this just my luck or is there something behind it ?
here is another for you guys . anyone else crazy like me and opening packs!!!!! open the 72's , EO needs help !!! I love seeing and reading this stuff. gives me more motivation.
my wife (god bless her) bought me an early fathers day gift from BBCARDEXCHANGE, a 72 series 3 unopened wax box. i opened it yesterday. i wasn't disappointed. a little more than half were rejects but i pulled plenty of psa 9 and 10 candidates. i have a clemente , clemente ia and an aaron that appear (under intense scrutiny) to be psa 9's, a handful of commons that look as good as any 10's i've seen, a blazing mccovey, and 30 or so other cards that are a lock for 9's including some low pops (rosario, stone, boswell ia and others), a bunch of psa 8 material for my set, only 2 packs where all the lower right corners were a little dinged. the bad news, aaron ia (2), mcrae ia (4) all o/c or m/c (sorry EO), a mint but stained palmer, an awesome looking clemente ia and 2 aparicio's with 30+ year old gum fused to them. i know a large portion of the price she paid for the box is applied to the absolute thrill of ripping 30 year old wax , but WELL worth it.
thanks to steve hart of BBCexchange on a professional and quality transaction.
my worst unopened story came this morning when i opened a newly bought box of eggs and only had 10 eggs instead of 12. i guess this is the one time you want a product searched before you buy!
I decided to open a 1980 Topps vending box last night. I have a few boxes left from a case and decided to open one. The quality of the centering and color was incredible. I did not get a Henderson (bad luck) but did get several copies of the other key cards. There were numerous cards that might qualify for PSA 9 (and maybe a couple 10s). The Ryan LL, Carew, Morgan and Bench are as good as it gets. I am submitting them and some other cards to PSA. I will let you know what the grades are when they come back.
BEST: Last December, I used my Xmas bonus and purchased an unopened 86 Topps Football wax box from BBCExchange. I didn't get one, or two, or three, or four, or even five Jerry Rice RC's...I got SIX! I was stoked. One of them had some serious gum stains, the other five were pretty sweet. Later, to help finance the completion of my '58 baseball set, I sold all of them except one.
WORST: Bought 4 '77 baseball rack packs and the only significant cards were a Reggie Jackson and a Pete Rose. Maybe racks aren't the way to go with '77s, I don't know. Question to all the 77 collectors: have you had more fruitful pulls with vending boxes, wax or rack packs?
Worst: Had a 1954 Bowman large 1 cent football wax pack I swore I'd never open. After a surgery I took one too many pain pills and decided to get brave...or stupid. Operating on a high (literally) I carefully opened it. What I got was a very off centered, gum stained unlisted common. I still have the wrapper if anyone wants it in a trade, I'll even throw in the card.
For non-sports I opened a 1950's Western Round-up and pulled an awesome Wyatt Earp with a small dent on the pic. The wrapper is valued at $50..trades?
Best: At the height of the homerun race in 98, I gave my son $15 (he has the Midas touch) and told him to pick an 85 pack. He ran his fingers on top of the upright packs as though he was possessed and quickly made his choice . Yep, third card in was a McGwire. He replied "I knew it was in there"...smarta$$ kid. It came back a solid 9. His other first try picks that day included an SP ARod rookie & Bowman Chipper rookie, both 8's. I think that was the last time I bought packs.
I have opened several vending boxes with the following luck:
1981 Topps Football - No Montana, Monk or Winslow 1977 Topps Football - No Largent, Payton, Bradshaw or Staubach (from waxme...go figure) 1980 Topps Baseball - No Henderson - but a sweet Ryan (PSA 9+) 1977 Topps Football - O/C Dorsett and a PSA 8 Payton
Worst was by far the the 77 Football - over $150 down the drain... Also, recently bought 1987 Fleer BB and no Bonds, 10 1981 Topps FB racks w/ no Montana, 8 1986 Topps FB racks w/ no Rice (That's why I've switched by buying whole sets or PSA graded cards)
Best - I always have good luck w/ Mark Murphy. I bought 2 1959 Topps FB cello packs and pulled 4 9's, and several 8's (no big stars), 6 1982 Topps rack packs and pulled 3 Ripken rc's (all PSA 8+ condition), and a 1982 and 1983 Topps vending boxes w/ 75 to 100 PSA 9+ condition cards each.
Collecting vintage auto'd fb cards and Dan Marino cards!!
Best- I once had two unopened boxes of 1963 topps Baseball we bought in a yard sale for a dollar. We bought in 1977
Worse- several years later my Dad decided to buy me a bb gun for Christmas and then next thing I know a bunch of those cards were used for target practice. (I still had a few unopened packs and a unopened box which I traded for a ton of comics back in 1985)
Even Worse- I know Mastro's Auction recently sold an unopened 1963 topps baseball box for $79,000.
About 3 years ago I bought a 1989 Fleer BB wax box on ebay, I think I paid $35 for the box. I cracked the box and got a Griffey rookie. Sent it to PSA and got a "10". At that time, Griffey's sold for $450. It was a great deal at the time. I still have the card, but only worth $75-100.
My luck on vending has been very bad. I bought a 1979 topps BB vending box last month from Mark Murphy and the vast majority of the cards were miscut - not even off centered!!!! I have been sticking with rack packs lately...
Regards,
Greg M.
Collecting vintage auto'd fb cards and Dan Marino cards!!
My best unopened story is newer material. I pulled 28 autographed golf cards out of a box of 2001 upper deck Sp authentic golf. You were supposed to get 2.
I also pulled 3 that were numbered to 25. Sold all of them on ebay and got back over $900 on an $75 box.
Dave Johnson- Big Red Country-Nebraska Collector of Vintage Golf cards! Let me know what you might have.
Best: Bought 5 packs of 1947-1966 exhibit cellos for 35 bucks each. Decided to crack one open, pulled the mantle and a musial. Got so excited, not sure why, but I cracked the next. why bother after hitting the mantle? That yeilded a Mays and a nice Don Newcombe. They are all currently at PSA awaiting grading. Not worth very much, but still exciting to see those players.
Worst: Stupid freaking Xmas pack, 1956 topps with a "mint" Aparicio rookie showing. Paid 550$ Cracked the pack, had nothing else but a Joe Torre rookie in it. Aparicio had a "thumb nail" mark on the back from somone checking through the cards!!!!! Aparicio was a PSA 6, Joe Torre was a PSA %, and a Gene freese looked good, but Print defects got a 7 NQ. My net loss was about 400$
Just finished cracking open a 1985 Topps vending case. Got it from Dave and Adams card world. There was a nice discount because the case had some damage. Intended to open only a couple boxes and sell the rest. After the the first 4 boxes I had to keep it for myself. The Clemens rookie cards were perfectly centered got 12 really nice cards that should get at least a 9 and hopefully at least two 10's. The Mcgwire's were nice had a little tilt but should get at least 2 9's.
Before I read the thread about the Griffey rookie always being in the same place in the box and to avoid buying opened boxes, I bought 10 packs of 1989 UD on ebay for $15. I obviously found an honest seller because in those 10 packs I got 2 Griffeys (and 2 Johnsons).
This is for you @thisistheshow - Jim Rice was actually a pretty good player.
I just bought 2 1981 Topps Wax boxes, a 1981 topps vending box, 1981 Fleer Wax box.
I got two super shard well centered Raines Rookies, Two Johny Benches, Onw way off centered, one a little off top to bottom. Some over all nice stuff. 1981 Topps is tough to pull centered cards. May be a 100 ou of 1500 are centered.
