IS THIS A SCAM??

Just received the following email from ebay....is it a scam? Thanks for any advice.....Arthur

Dear eBay customer,

During our regularly scheduled account maintenance and verification procedures, we have detected a slight error in your billing information.

This might be due to either of the following reasons:

1. A recent change in your personal information ( i.e.change of address).
2. Submiting invalid information during the initial sign up process.
3. An inability to accurately verify your selected option of payment due to an internal error within our processors.

Please update and verify your information by clicking the link below:

It is--the problem is that's the text... I'm sure the actual link didn't go there.

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

That address is not the site that the link takes you to. These scam emails are sent in HTML, so although that address is a valid eBay address, where you land when you click on the link is something totally different. The scammers count on a certain percentage of people who don't look at the address bar after they have clicked the link.

Alright. I understand. When I read the e-mail, I immediately though scam, but after copying the link, I wasn't sure. Its scams like these that make me glad eBay doesn't know my real e-mail address (I only check the one they have when I buy something).

  • Ebay won't ask you for billing info. in an e-mail. Whenever you get something like this, just go to your Ebay account. If you can't address it from there, it probably isn't legit.

Indication #1 that it is a scam:

    << <i>Dear eBay customer, >>

A real ebay email will address you by your user name.

Second indication that it is a scam:

<< <i>Please update and verify your information by clicking the link below: >>

A real eBay email will direct you to go sign on to the eBay website. It will not provide a link for you to do so!

The scammers are getting more sophisticated all the time. I received an "eBay" e-mail this morning, including all of their logos, that was addressed to me by name but was an obvious scam. If the e-mail requests any info such as eBay ID, Password, Credit Card #, etc. it will be a scam. eBay clearly needs to spend some serious money to track down and prosecute these scammers.
    All glory is fleeting.
  • I get a couple of those per month. Most definitely a scam. Forward it to spoof@ebay.com and let them deal with it.
