I can't tell you if it's authentic, but if it is I'd grade it AU-55. There appear to be hairlines all over the obverse and I see several rim dings.

    EF45?
  • i'd say 53, but thoes hairlines could drop it a few

Except for the hairlines, I like the overall look of the coin... purrty...

I dunno....If you're sending it to PCGS, they may body-bag it for exscessive cleaning, re-toning, or counterfeit? IMHO. I'm not sure it's real-would have to look at it in person.image

I think it might make an AU50,it's a shoo'in XF45(imo).Rim bumps look bad.

Probably an auish coin that the services will still slab with the hairlines and rim dings, but they'll knock it down to xf/45.

That is, of course, if the hairlines aren't very excessive, and from the image they look like they may very well be excessive.

Still a very decent, well detailed example.

au details, cleaned, rim ding. for me, it's a xf-40 coin.

  • AU50. The hits and the dings will bring it down. Reverse is a little weak. Could end up XF, but I think it deserves AU.

I like it, it has a 'historic' look to it. Since it has retoned, it may just get really dinged for hairlines rather than BB'ed.

The main thing this coin has going for it is that it has a lot of "meat" or detail. Beyond, it's loaded with problems.

The coin was cleaned with an abrasive at one time that hairlined it. Then it either toned on its own or someone tried to hurry up the process. If I were a betting man, I'd vote for "hurried up the process." Before the "numismatists" messed with it, it picked up a few rim dings. I'm not a fan of any of these problems which means that I would not a high bidder on this coin.

It's not horrible, but it's no gem either. I'd say it's got a 50-50 chance beween a "quiet" net grade of EF-40 or maybe even a 45 or a body bag for AT or altered surfaces.

I bet that if it is real, which I would say it is, they would slabe that coin. PCGS is fairly loose on bust dollars. I saw one a year ago that was obviously cleaned in a holder.

  • Yup. As long as the cleaning is old and it has retoned OK, they tend to be kinda generous with cleaning.

I'll let you all know as soon as PCGS renders an opinion. My guess is XF-40 - rim dents keep it from grading higher. I am quite certain it isn't fake but less certain what the rim dent will mean.

Come on guys! Rim nicks and cleaning. Those two factors do not an AU-50 make.

If you guys let you standards slip like this, pretty soon the stuff in ACG and ITC holders will be just fine.

Letting the coin doctors and crooks fool inexperienced collectors is one thing. Dropping your standards down their level is another.
