Ugly coins in high grade holders

Lately I have noticed too many unspectacular and sometimes down right ugly coins in high grade holders (MS65 and up). How does this EVER happen? isn't a 65 considered a Gem by numismatists? Are some graders overworked or are some just sleepwalking? Now I do not profess to being a grading expert but I do have a sharp eye (see the lady to the left).
This week I went into a coin shop to take a look at MS65 Saints, 5 to be exact all NGC. While two were nice, one was just OK, one was definately questionable and one was just plain ugly. This ugly coin had excessive bag marks, a dirty appearance, pale color and it totally lacked lustre. It looked more like a
MS 62 to me. They also had an unmemorable MS66 PCGS which looked like a 64 on a good day. Has overgrading become a problem? image

Perhaps your standards for grading are slightly different from PCGS, NGC, etc.

No, I agree, you will see ugly coins in high grade holders. Some of these are just mistakes and should be sent back for a grade review. Then there are coins (often Franklins) with ugly toning but will get high grades. The strike is perfect and the coin is free from marks, but the toning is horible and ugly. It seems the graders forget luster and eye appeal.

Lots of people write about looking for undergraded coins to get an upgrade. There should be an equal number of coins that are overgraded and should be sent in for downgrading. I never see posts saying, hey I sent back 4 coins to PCGS and they all came back 1 point lower after the review.

  • Come on, we are not talking about just one grade here but rather multiple grades too high. Surely some of you have seen overgraded examples and thought how did this coin end up with this grade.

    "technical" grading.

it means sometimes, really ugly coins can be MS65 or 66 or even 67,

while beautiful coins are sometimes MS 63 or even (gasp) AU58.

  • Resubmissions have maxed out so many coins it is a joke.

Figure in about 10 years either the slabbing companies will have regrouped to create a new company or their slabbed grades will be meaningless. Fixing the pop report should also be a priority.

Until then buy coin and not the slab.
  • This coin was so far away from a MS65 that I now believe it was simply a mistake. It likely was graded 61 or 62 and was put in the 65 holder by accident.

Thats is the main reason that eye-appeal is so much more meaningful to me than the technical grade. I would much rather have a super nice eye-appealing coin in a lower grade, than have a technically 65 or so thats is mediocre, much less down right ugly.
