New Coin: Indian Eagle...guess what grade!

Just got this on ebay last night, can't wait till it gets here! See if you can guess what grade it is and say why you think so.

I heard they were making a French version of Medal of Honor. I wonder how many hotkeys it'll have for "surrender."

I will stand by my sight-unseen guess of 62.
  • I'll say MS63, but I'm no expert. Whatever grade it is, it's nice!
  • I have no clue. I just started collecting coins.

    A trade i made got me going. I traded a dovetail for a 1912 NTC MS60 2.50 indian.

Ill say Au-58. But really hard to tell from a photo. It looks like slight rub on the high points of the eagle on reverse. Can tell without coin in hand if in fact it is slight wear or just duller in photo from the strike.

If not, then Ms-62 to 63.

Anyway, whether 58 or 62, still a nice coin.

Nice luster, first look would be a 63. A closer look makes it seem a little too marky, so probably 62.

Very Nice... No doubt in my mind PCGS would grade it at 62..
  • ddink, I'll say MS63. Not much wear, nice luster. Usually I don't ask this, but what did you pay? Totally understand if you don't say.

Looks like AU58 based on the reverse eagle, but if it's weak strike and not wear (can't tell luster from the pic), I would put it in a PCGS 62 holder.

Really difficult to judge accurately from the photo, but I see quite a few marks, possible light wear on eagle feathers. AU58??

    Probably MS-63.

I don't know if there is a rub on the eagle's wing or not, but if there is and it is graded MS-63, it's not unusual.

Both of the major services seem to grade the 1926 and 1932 eagles fast and lose. Maybe it's because the "bullion dealers' send these two common dates in for grading in bulk deals and catch some breaks. At any rate I usually have to buy a slightly better date (e.g. 1910-D or 1911) to get a "true grade" piece of this type for my customers.

It's shame because I think that the 1932 eagle is kind of neat. It's the only affordable U.S. gold coin that was minted during the Great Depression. I found a properly graded one a year or so ago in a PCGS MS-63 holder, and put it away for myself.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
  • It's nice but it's from 1926. That doesn't exactly make it new then, does it, ddink?
  • Hey all, thanks for the guesses! That's one thing that's so fun about this hobby--being able to show your coin to others. PCGS graded it an MS-62, and though I haven't yet rec'd the coin, from the image it kinda looks (to me) like the obverse is closer to 63 while the reverse has quite a few more marks on it.

Thanks for letting me share my new purchase with ya!

P.S. Kuch--it was just shy of $490, delivered.

ddink, you made a sound purchase. I'm thinking I didn't do well on my 1913 MS62 buy at $750.
