When did the 04-O Morgan Become a better date?

I was just going over the greysheet in preparation to list some coins, and noticed that the 1904-O is listed at 55/60, while the commons are 44/48. So when did the 1904-O become a better date that is now fetching 25% over the commons? I just looked at a Feb 2001 greysheet and it is lumped in with the other commons at 32/35.

Probably has more to do with 1904/2004 100-year promotion offers by the cable TV coin folks than anything else. It's still just a common date.
    When in doubt, don't.

image Should have thought of that. Come to think of it, this will be the last year that these hundred year sets will be able to be put together, until 2021.
  • Same thing happened last year with the 03's...I had a bear of a time finding an 03-P at a reasonable price.

That 100 year deal does add some value/demand, same thing with me Paigow Johnny, I was trying to find a nice 03 Morgan for a guy last year who wanted one for a Harley Davidson commemrative deal and had a heck of a time.

  • Try putting together a 3 hundred year project... 1800, 1900 & 2000
Maybe I'll find a steal for the 1800 Bust Dollar, someday...

At one time the '04-O WAS a "better date" in uncirculated, along with the '98-O and (especially) the '03-O. This was back in the early 60's. The "Guide Book" back then listed the '03-O at $1,500 in Uncirculated, and I think the other two were $200-$300 in that grade. Then large quantities of Uncirculated dollars of those dates were found in U.S. government bags, and prices plummeted to a small fraction of what they had been.

Iclugza..........Your telling your age! I too remember when the 03-O and 04-O were bringing big bucks until the Federal Reserve release some bags. Hate to say this but I remember when the 1895 Morgan proofs sold for $500 and I don't own one! imageimageimageimageimageimageimageimage

Cocoinut............You hit it right on the nail head. The Morgan 1895 proofs sold for $500 in the late 50s.
However, that was a month salary to me and I was making what I considered to good money. In those years you could buy a new home in Los Angeles for around $18,000 and a new Chevrolet for under $3000!

    Well, it's a better date when it's PCGS MS67 with colorful toning !!! Here's one ...

    K6AZ,

Yes, you are quite right !! That's a dealer's photo, and it is definitely enhanced.

HOWEVER, I have seen the coin in person, and I absolutely loved it (even if it looks a little different than the photo I posted).

    Best,

Yes it is pretty obvious. But I have found by using the right lighting, you don't need to do that. A coin with that type of toning is usually very nice, but when you look at an image with that much saturation it tends to make you wonder.

There are a few 1904-O dollars that I think ARE worth a premium if they are in MS-63 or better. Most 1904-O dollars have no breast feathers on the eagle despite the fact that they could even be P-L.. I have bought and sold a few that did have all of the breast feather detail. THOSE coins are worth more IMO, but I have yet to see someone charge a premium for them.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

There are a few out there Bill, but they are tough to find. Since the 1904-O used the C3 reverse, it makes it that much harder to find them with breast feather detail.
