Numbers of women buying coins is on the rise

When I started dealing coins there were very few women that collected or bought coins but that appears to be changing. I am seeing more women at the shows actually looking at coins (rather than just haning out with their spose) and I'm also noticing I'm shipping a much higher percentage of my Ebay sales to ladies. I would like to welcome all the ladies to the hobby and it is long overdue!

Note: This is just my personal observation. *******

Are you sure your Pop Reports are accurate Bear? It could just be inflation by counting women collectors twice... image Or maybe it's a lowball figure, and there are many women who are counted as men... image

I've seen more women at my local show as well. I think it's a good thing. The more diversified the people who are interested in coins the better the prospects for the future for the hobby. Besides, it's nice to have a woman you can spend 5 minutes with talking about coins. I'd like to see more women and minorities involved with the hobby.

My mother & sisters never got into the hobby, I think they thought my dad & me were nuts, well maybe they're right [but thats besides the point image] but my wife has been collecting coins longer then I have and unlike me, she still has her coin albums she had as a kid and that was a loooong time ago.

It's great to see a broader base in the hobby. Not only with the addition of so many
women but there are more people of more races, religions, ethnicities, and age groups
as well. The largest gains so far seem to have been with women and younger people,
but there do appear to be lots of others also coming aboard.

The increasing numbers of women seems to have been occuring for quite some time, at
    least back into the mid-'80's.

  • Hello every one! I’m new to the forum. I’ve been lurking around about a week now. I really like it here and I have learned so much since I am new to collecting. Not sure what side of the line I stand on since I’ve been collecting coins and currency, but mostly coins I always figured collecting was more of a guy things. Because boys are taught to collect coins early in life. Even now you see men put there change from there pocket in a dish or jar when they disrobe. In addition I never really grow up with anyone collecting coins on a serious note being a female and black. But one lady that once owned a bar and the drinkers in the poor section would come in with old silver dollars and such to get a drink. She would give me a silver dollar or half dollar on special occasions such as my birthday. For about a month now I have been collecting. I guess you could say I’m a woman that’s always trying to come up. My history I’ve done it all! From hustling in the dope game to hooking up adult entertainment. Then I found out the web was where I need to be. So I went to running an adult site. Now it’s the Ebay! Then I had a buyer whose profile was filled with him buying currency. That’s where I was hooked since I have a fixation on paintings. Currency I love to look at but I probably couldn’t tell a fake from the real thing. So I stuck more with the coins. I buy coins in hope of making a profit by putting them back on the market. But as soon as I get them in my hand, I have a big problem letting them go.

The forum has really opened my eyes that every thing bright and new isn’t always the prettiest. And I must say it was refreshing to come to the forum and see that there were other women collecting coins. Not just widows who’s husbands had left them a hoard of old coins. Women with a passion.

    Welcome aboard Sexyblkstealth.

It sounds like you already have some of the "passion" yourself.

  • Thank you cladking! I can say this I have something to show for my money. Before I could never see where my money went. Now I take what little I make from one site and buy coins. Which makes me feel really good. Now if I could curve my desire and buy low. I see what I want and I feel I must have it or I will go crazy.

Does anyone have any theories as to why this hobby is male-dominated?

My other passion is photography (I shoot weddings and managed a camera store and photo lab for over four years), and that is another hobby/career that is male dominated.

Thanks for the welcome!! Hey, coins are FUN!!
  • I think it is interesting that several of us seem to work in male dominated fields. I currently work for a software company. There is only one other woman in my entire department. All of my jobs have been in male dominated fields - warehouse management, inventory control, OR Investigator, etc. I wonder if that is common to most of us?

  • Thank you wjd283! Well I use to spend my money on worse things then shoes. Coin collecting is way better. I could never understand the whole concept of having a hobby to relax and relieve my stress. Ealandg I envy you ladies because you have true marketing skills. Guys taught me to market to men. Now it’s hard for me to relate to the average consumer with my crazy back ground. I’ve catered to men fantasy and desires so long I’m just lost. Even in my ebay store there is not one thing for women. All men jeans, knives, jackets, and etc. I don’t think I could give a woman a free pair of pants. But I’m trying and hopefully I will learn along the way. And with each step my life will improve and I will make moves to higher grounds.
  • Well, before I went to college I worked at a pornographic video store, so I guess I can relate on some level. Coins are kind of a "man's world", but there are some ladies who are extremely astute dealers and collectors. Welcome to the boards!
  • Yes I guess I should move around the forum more. I have been cruising the US Coin Section the most. Trying to learn the basics. I often wonder if some of the coins I have now are coins that have belonged to other members of this forum I’ve purchased. Plus 1jester your invitation to the Darkside sounds like my kind of Place. I might feel really at home there with that kind of name. I can never resist the wicked side of things. Curiosity killed the cat.
