While I'm partial to MS Franklins, I agree "Liberty Nickels " are a great choice, say in MS64. If you have a 5 year or so plan, PR65 Liberty Nickels are also a good choice.

Only 9 coins, obtainable in mint state (1872 is tough, but easier to find in mint state
than XF). What more could you want!!

  • I think Liberty Nickels are seriously underrated and underpriced. They are not terribly popular, like Morgans or Barber anythings, so it isn't too tough to find nice ones at reasonable prices, but even the keys aren't too bad.

I think Peace dollars are doable.

Many are doable but if I had to choose by beauty and affordability it would be the buffalos without varieties. By date and mint alone, they are not the cheapest by far, but I think the best for the money.

  • For $4000/yr, depending on how many years you want to spend on it, you could tackle Indian Head Cents... a little ambitious in MS, perhaps, but man, would it be something to be proud of! I have a complete set in G-VF and it's my pride and joy!

Also, Flying Eagles... 4 coins and done! (May need to save up for that 56, though!!!)

Jefferson nickels in non-Full Steps can be done in MS65+ very painlessly if you stay away from the varieties. In fact, I don't think there's a single coin at the MS65 level that will cost even as much as $100.
    When in doubt, don't.

I like big silver coins, so have done Franklins in mint state which was very affordable and completable and am working on the Peace dollars, one coin left in circulateds and half the set left to upgrade to MS, this one is a little tougher especially if you're trying for a matched set but can be done in a couple years.

Peace Dollars. Its the PERFECT mix, coins are tough to find, but not too tough, if you stay at MS64 or below, cost doenst get too bad, plus you can drop some of the keys to 63 to save a chunk of money. Especially in an album its often tough to tell a good 63 from an average 64. But the coins also arent cheap. Thats why I like it, it costs money, takes time and effort, but isn't prohibitive, like morgans.

    Plus they're freakin gorgeous.

Ike dollars or Kennedies would be cake.

Franklins arent so bad either, I just dont like em.

I'd have to agree with Dennis on this thread. MS non-FS Jeffs can be done fairly reasonable and quickly.

One thing tho---you didn't say if you wanted raw or slabbed. That makes a difference. I think I would still recommend the Jeff series though.

It should take about four years to complete Indian quarter eagles in MS-62, except the keydate 11-D, which you will need to get in 60 or 61, on your budget. If you take on a series like this, get the 11-D first; the rest is downhill.

$4000 a year? w/ that kind of budget, many, if not most series are within reach.
