GOETZ: Mozart

K-323, WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART, Portrait Medal,1925,70mm, Cast AE, Rare in this size.

Commemorative medal to mark the third May Festival at Wartburg, 1925.

This beautiful portrait medal of Wolfgang Mozart is from Goetz' Musical Series. Although rarely acknowledged as such, Goetz was one of the most talented portraitists of his generation. The reverse is a snapshot of the medieval village below the Wartburg castle decked out for the Festival with four putto playing musical instruments. Although Goetz was rightly very proud of his series of Great German musicians they didn't sell in profitable numbers. The editions for both the cast and struck versions of these medals is very small and today are among the scarcer, particularly the large bronze, of his 'speculative' pieces.

There are so many people in Eastern Europe that forget that Wartburg is actually a castle and not only a lousy socialist vehicle (calling it a car would stretch the truth beyond recognition image)

Yes, the engine requires that you put oil in the fuel image

  • So what you are saying is, is that the eastern European cars were sort of like our Lawnboy push mowers. Is that correct?

    BTW, cool medal.

This format is quite a bit more visually appealing in comparison to the smaller stuck 36mm, and 60mm silver and gold pieces. As you could imagine, the reverse would appear quite "busy" in these smaller formats.

    That's indeed a beautiful medal.

Incidentally, Mozart died at the age of 35 in complete ignominy, and was buried penniless in a pauper's grave. I wonder what he would have thought about his incredible fame-to-come if he had lived only ten more years.

    We ARE watching you.

First of all, I'd like to say that I love the beautiful rendition of the inner courtyard of Wartburg castle. Goetz is pretty good! image

And Philip, thanks for posting that picture of a truly luxury automobile... image Notice the huge gaps between the body panels?? It's about one inch at least. I believe that when Volkswagen bought the company after the wall came down, they did install at least a good engine before killing the model and name entirely. I suppose they're in no hurry to resurrect such an infamous brand! On the other hand, they have kept the Skoda name alive, and those cars now enjoy a decent reputation for quality.
