NGC old styrofoam box collectors item??

I was just wondering if any of you guys who spend time across the street have ever seen this topic come up?

It occurs to me that those old first generation NGC white styro boxes probably were not saved in any substantial numbers and may actually be quite scarce, especially in pristine condition. I only have one and it's pretty beat up.

I would have a difficult time believing that people would pay a substantial premium for a styrofoam box - but I've seen weirder things.

  • I would buy them. Yes, they carry a premium. Talking with David Lange, these boxes were used in-house at NGC and not widely given out. When they moved to Florida, David said NGC threw out all the boxes and switched to cardboard for in-house coins. They are pretty hard to find.

I think he meant that discussing a valuable styrofoam box would best take place on April 1st. An understandable reaction.

    Thank you.

Here's a picture of styrofoam collectors searching the local dump. I think Cameron's the one in the yellow cap, but I'm not 100% sure.

If a guy can get $12 for "Steve's Lucky Belly Button Lint", a NGC styrofoam box WILL sell on ebay. Does anyone remember that auction?

  • You guys might think I am crazy but I dare you to find some of these. I'd pay over $20 for another one of the boxes.

The guy with the pink-striped shirt thinks he has "unearthed" an extreme rarity - A styrofoam micro container with the guts of half a pizza-roll stuck to it. The guy with the white babushka is the on-site 3rd-party grader. He's coming over to identify it as an R4 - rarer than an intact edible packing peanut, but much more common than an old McDonald's polystyrene Big Mac container (the King of styromatics)

    Cam -

I'm having a "yard sale" this friday morning. Come on over and if you see anything you like, make me an offer. The items for sale will be sitting by the curb and will be probably be gone by 9am.

I'll match Cameron's offer for one (And if only one is available I'll out bid him. image ) I am also interested in other old boxes from the services, (I'll pay $30 for a seven coin Paramount box, $75 for a 33 coin box. Heck I'd pay $10 just to SEE a 33 coin box.) or any other old memorabilia from them. I am really getting carried away with this slabbing history.

Did you now that an unused McDonalds Large French Fry container with the Batman emblem on it (This was the first McDonalds/movie promotion) is worth over $200?

The more I think about this, the more I think the styrofoamatists are onto something. Think about it. The styrofoam boxes are now rarer than the sample slabs, and the sample slabs are now rarer than many of the rarest coins. I feel like I've really missed the boat.

  • Like I said before, NGC said they threww them all out when they moved and never gave them away because they were used in-house to move coins around in. This piece of styrafoam is as scarce as most Pattern coins.

Styro boxes are yesterdays news, the NEW wave of collecting is the little 'Registered Mail' stickers that come on the packages when your submissions are returned, and consecutive registered numbers from multiple submissions are very rare......get with it!

Cameron - I hate to tell you this, but I think they actually shipped coins in those boxes. Doesn't mean anyone saved them. Actually, I'm SURE nobody saved them. So your "rarity" is safe.

And what about the PCGS labels that are (were?) supposed to go on the Registered packages? The one that indicate(d) the level of service the coins are being submitted under. Those have to be rare, especially when cancelled by the Post Office. Does PCGS still use them? I know I don't.

An advantage to those styrofoam containers is if it's not full of slabs, you can put your coffee in it, and it will stay warm.

These boxes were indeed used to ship coins back in. So they might not be as scarce as you think.

  • What are the old PCGS boxes worth that the first generation rattlers were shipped in? I know they weren't styrofoam but they were still good for storing your slabs; lids wouldn't pop off like the green and blue plastic ones do today either.

Got pictures? Is this the cardboard and plastic box where the top fit completely down over the bottom?
  • Sorry no picture, but the lid did fit over the bottom. The bottom has a plastic insert which held the rattlers in place. Box holds 20 slabs I think. Outside of box is a black leather-grain type heavy paper. You oughta hear the racket with the rattlers rattling in this box when you move it....almost dangerous to look inside.

PCGS shipped newly graded coins back to you in these boxes, circa 1988-89.

I have two of these, but I'm not sure they were a PCGS product. I don't recall were they came from. I may have gotten them at the '89 ANA convention in Pittsburgh.

That '89 ANA convention incidently is where PCHS introduced (or at least very close to that time), the first non-rattler holders.

During the slab happy crack out days of 1987-1988 I used these styro boxes to support my bed! The bed frame had fallen apart and I had dozens of these things around. They had lots of strength and easily held up the box spring. When we moved they all went out.
    I didn't know I was sleeping on a collector's item!!!

I suppose it wouldn't be too hard to fake a styrofoam box. We'll indeed need a slabbing service for them, it looks like.

What about the old Whitman blue plastic 2x2 holder boxes?? How much is one of them worth? I just picked one up.
