Alan Hagar of ACG (Accugrade) fame has entered the Canadian Coin Market. He was seen buying Canadian coins on the boarse floor, competing for coins in the auction as bidder #100 and making collectors wonder what he could possibly be up to in Canada.Perhaps Alan will comment on the message boards.

How about a brief description of TOREX? I would really love to hear about it. Or maybe something from anyone who attended.
I have never been to a Canadian coin show. This is the Biggy, correct? What went down? Do tell.

Stewart, nice to see you around here.
"Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you." -Luke 11:9
"Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might." -Deut. 6:4-5
"For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; He will save us." -Isaiah 33:22
I'm guessing that he's buying whatever he can cheaply and sending it to NGC so he can sell it at inflated prices to unsuspecting buyers, then putting the rest in ACG slabs. From what I've seen, it doesn't look like a very successful strategy. link
edit: I mean the ones that say, 500 slabs, CU total value $$$$$$ , 3 PCGS and 4 NGC among the lot, the rest ACG ,NR

I thought that when I left rec.collecting.coins, one of the things I escaped from was hysterical posts re ACG.
Seems I was wrong?

The Boarse floor is very small. There were about 40 dealers. When they opened the show on Saturday the room was constantly packed. Most of the people are friendly and the coins are relatively inexpensive compared to U.S. coins. And there are some woman collectors too. There was also an 1800 lot auction Friday and Saturday night.Canada is also a FUN place.Presently the dollar is $1.33 U.S. to Canada. The Canadians love to party.

Philip,
I doubt anyone here is hysterical, but ACG and NTC are DREADFULLY bad at what they do. I have seen with my own eyes an ACG Walking Lib that they had graded MS-64, it was EF-45 at best. I heard from a trusted source about an ACG coin graded VF-45 (that is not a typo). To be quite honest your coins are worth MORE raw than graded by ACG. Those are facts, not hysterics.

In all seriousness, why are the grading standards so different? PCGS has a fairly tight reputation, but some seem to think that the MS 66 red 1920 cent is overgraded... IMOHO, I like this example (but I will leave that determinationto the true copper experts) and I have seen other Canadian Coins graded by PCGS, NGC and ANACS that look great. But for some reason, there seems to be something somewhere that is out to undermine the whole concept of TPG as to Canadian coins and in the final analysis, I believe that even with Canadian coins, we are better off with the TPG services than without them.

The biggest problem people have with Accugrade is the evidence there might be fraud involved in their grading of coins. Both Alan Hager and the company have been involved in court cases and other situations where people have come forward in sworn testimony alleging that the grade on Accugrade holders is assigned based on considerations other than the coin's appearance, with the intent to deceive. Many people who sell Accugrade coins have also made statements that could reasonably be considered deceptive in their attempts to market the coins for the highest possible price.
I find much of that evidence compelling, and I don't have any problem with forum members trying to expose what they believe are fraudulent practices that harm the hobby, and hence all of us.
I'm playing at a resort on Bowen Island outside of Vancouver over the Easter weekend. Looking forward to hitting a few coin shops up there while I'm in country.

I posted my comments on the wrong thread. I thought this was the thread on the 1920 Canadian Cent graded MS66 by PCGS. I extend my apologies for the misunderstanding. I understand your comments about a certain Company that looks at coins and places them in plastic in an attempt to offer a service.

I was referring to bitter flamewars, name calling, childish litigation threats, etc.
Don't know about ACG, but it seems people agree they stink.
Slabs are rare over here and so I cannot really understand that debate.
Sorry if I appear to be unreasonable
